Xbox Series X/S 2TB & 512GB SSD Expansion Cards Revealed

The Xbox Series X/S is set to get two more official external storage cards, giving players more choice when it comes to expanding the amount of memory they have available. A smaller Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X/S has been rumored to be on the way for some time now, with several retailer leaks and insiders suggesting it would be available at some point this year.

Having more access to expanded memory solutions is becoming more and more necessary as games get larger. The Xbox Series X comes with 1TB of internal storage, while the Xbox Series S has just 500GB available. Considering the fact that many AAA games routinely have file sizes of more than 100GB, users might only be able to have a handful of games installed on the console at a time. For example, Call of Duty: Vanguard is reportedly 270GB large.

Microsoft has announced that it is releasing two more expansion cards for the Xbox Series X/S. Joining the original 1TB Storage Expansion Card, which was designed as part of a close collaboration between Xbox and Seagate, are 512GB and 2TB versions. Xbox users can pre-order the smaller storage card right now at a price of $139.99 and it will launch in mid-November, while the 2TB card will be available to pre-order in November at $399.99 and launch in early December. Like the original 1TB Storage Expansion Card, these two new products are designed to match the performance of the internal storage for the Xbox Series X/S exactly. This means that owners can play games designed for the more powerful consoles from these cards, unlike other external storage devices.

Xbox head Phil Spencer also recently confirmed that Microsoft is not finished when it comes to acquiring video game developers. The company completed its purchase of Bethesda earlier this year and is still on the lookout for talented studios that would be a good fit for the brand. Speaking during the WSJ Tech Live event, Spencer said "we're definitely not done" when it comes to Microsoft purchasing more studios for Xbox.

It makes a lot of sense for Microsoft and Seagate to offer a wider range of Storage Expansion Cards, especially as the consoles are now almost a year old and players could have larger libraries of games. These new products will give users more choice when it comes to expanding the storage of the Xbox Series X/S and make installing more games that are ready to play easier than ever. That is certainly good news for players around the world.
