Warning! Spoilers ahead for Marvel's What If…? episode 8.
Uatu the Watcher’s intense battle with Ultron in Marvel’s What If…? raises questions about what impact he could have had in Avengers: Infinity War when Thanos killed half of everyone in the universe. The Watcher claims to see everything that happens, which means that he did indeed make a conscious decision not to stand in the way when Thanos acquired the final Infinity Stone and used the snap in Wakanda.
After several episodes of observing alternate universes, the Uatu the Watcher faced a major dilemma in Marvel’s What If…? when Ultron Vision came onto the scene, complete with a full set of Infinity Stones. When the villain discovered the Watcher’s existence, a thrilling showdown erupted between the two. The Watcher, who had become accustomed to being a spectator on the sidelines, found himself suddenly thrust into the midst of Ultron’s crusade. Now, it looks like the Watcher is poised to take action against Ultron’s efforts by assembling the Guardians of the Multiverse, starting with episode 4’s Evil Doctor Strange.
How the Watcher was able to hold his own against Ultron Vision proves that he’s incredibly powerful, meaning that there are so many threats across the multiverse that the Watcher could have ended had he taken measures against them. One such threat was Thanos in Infinity War. Looking at what Marvel’s What If…? episode 8 established about the Watcher’s insane power level, it makes sense that the character could easily have stopped the snap from ever happening.
The Watcher’s abilities clearly demonstrated that he’s on par with Ultron Vision, even though the latter has all six Infinity Stones and can kill Thanos with just one. That’s because the Watcher is a cosmic entity; in Marvel Comics, beings like the Watcher, Eternity, Galactus, and the Celestials are all several levels above the heroes and most of their villains, including Thanos. Based on what transpired in the show’s latest episode, the same is evidently true for the MCU. With all his power, it seems highly likely that the Watcher could have successfully intervened at any time in Infinity War. During the battle in Wakanda, Thanos was short two Infinity Stones and was presumably much weaker than What If…?’s Ultron Vision. So if the Watcher had shown up to stop the snap, he could’ve overwhelmed the Mad Titan before the moment where he acquired the Mind Stone and executed the snap.
Instead, the Watcher seemingly passed on multiple chances to step in, thus allowing Thanos to attain ultimate power. As for why he would permit this to happen, that can be attributed to the level of danger that the villain posed. If the Watcher didn’t think it was necessary to stop Evil Doctor Strange from destroying his entire reality in Marvel’s What If…?, then it stands to reason that he wouldn’t break his rules to stop Thanos either, especially since he was only a threat to half of his universe. Thanos and Evil Doctor Strange were only problems for their respective timelines, whereas Ultron Vision has multiversal plans to wreak havoc.
