Why Kumail Nanjiani Loved Filming Obi-Wan's Space Scenes

Kumail Nanjiani loved filming Obi-Wan Kenobi's space scenes. Before appearing opposite Ewan McGregor in the upcoming Disney+ series, Nanjiani will be joining the MCU in Eternals, in which the actor famously bulked up to play one of the titular superheroes named Kingo. After that, he will head to a galaxy far, far away for forthcoming Star Wars spinoff show centered around McGregor's prequel character, the iconic Jedi Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi.

After years of rumors about McGregor's return, it was officially announced at the D23 Expo in 2019, with more details to come at Disney's Investor Day in 2020. The Obi-Wan Kenobi series will be set a decade after the events of Episode III — Revenge of the Sith and will also see Hayden Christensen return as Darth Vader, setting up a highly-anticipated rematch between the former master and apprentice. Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse also reprise their roles from the prequels as Owen and Beru Lars. The show will also introduce several new characters in supporting roles, played by O'Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Benny Safdie, and Indira Varma.

In a conversation with Rolling Stone, Kumail Nanjiani shared his excitement about the Obi-Wan show, specifically getting the chance to work alongside McGregor. Though he admits to feeling a bit intimidated by him, Nanjiani quickly settled in. He especially loved filming the space scenes inside the Volume since "it really feels like you're in a spaceship flying through space." Read what Nanjiani had to say below:

You really feel like you’re there. The first scene we shot, it was Star Wars outside the windows, with aliens walking around and ships flying by and all this stuff, but the rest of it just looked like a warehouse. So I did a couple of takes and then Ewan was like, “You know, none of this is real.” I knew the windows weren’t real, but the walls weren’t either! I looked and I was like, “Wow, the walls are projected.” The only thing that was real in the whole room was the desk I was sitting at. It was wild. It was really, really exciting. I love shooting like that, because you don’t have to pretend that you’re on a spaceship flying through space. It really feels like you’re in a spaceship flying through space. And it’s amazing to be inside the world of Star Wars, the world that I’ve been watching since I was born. I’ve been a fan as long as I can remember. In fact, I just went to Disneyland, and I went to the Star Wars world, and I was like, “Oh, this kinda feels like being at work.

The upcoming Obi-Wan show is using the same Volume filming technology popularized by Jon Favreau on another Disney+ Star Wars series, The Mandalorian. Also known as StageCraft LED services, the technology is essentially a 360-degree virtual set within an indoor soundstage. This results in fewer green screens and hyper-realistic scenery on set which allows actors to become more immersed in the setting. Based on his comments, Nanjiani seems to have had a blast with the innovative filming technology.

Filming the Obi-Wan show must feel like a childhood dream come true for actors like Nanjiani, who admits to being a huge Star Wars fan for as long as he can remember. Hopefully, the fun he had on set will translate to his performance on screen and allow viewers to share in his excitement. While the Obi-Wan Kenobi series does not yet have a release date, Nanjiani can be seen as Kingo in the upcoming MCU film, Eternals, releasing in theaters on November 5.
