Westworld: Each Main Character's Most Iconic Scene So Far

In a show that explores weighty concepts like human consciousness, free will, and ambition, it is the characters who keep the story grounded. Through the performances of talented actors like Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, Thandiwe Newton, and Jeffrey Wright, Westworld has a cast of complex, memorable, and riveting characters that bring the philosophical and action-packed story to life.

Each of these characters has one scene that is particularly iconic. These scenes capture the essence of these characters and their development in an especially dramatic or surprising manner that fans will always remember.

10 Bernard: Revealed To Be A Host

In one of Westworld's biggest plot twists so far, Bernard is revealed to be a host modeled after Arnold. The affable and intelligent Bernard had appeared to be a human up to that point, although there was plenty of subtle foreshadowing that hinted that he was a host. Everything fans knew about Bernard changed at this moment and no one would ever look at his character the same way again.

This is particularly the case after Ford commands Bernard to strangle Theresa to death and Bernard's programming compels him to kill the woman he loves without hesitation. While other characters are shown to be humans later on in the show, none of the revelations ever had the same shock and emotional impact as the Bernard surprise.

9 Charlotte Hale: Her Death

After two seasons of ruthless manipulation and murder, Charlotte Hale finally gets what is coming to her. Charlotte sees a host built in her image, a host who says to her, "You wanted to live forever? Be careful what you wish for." The host--who is actually Dolores--then shoots Charlotte and kills her.

Charlotte is confronted with the price of her greed and immoral ambition and she pays the ultimate price for it. She wanted to be immortalized as a host and eradicate all the hosts from the parks. Instead, Charlotte is killed by a host taking on her physical guise, and her likeness continues to be used to undermine everything she was working for in the outside world.

8 Caleb: Erasing Rehoboam

Just as Dolores killing Ford began a new chapter of freedom for the hosts, Caleb erasing Rehoboam begins a new chapter of freedom for humanity. While Dolores helped push him in the direction of this decision, it is ultimately Caleb's choice.

He uses his free will to ensure neither he nor the rest of humanity will be controlled by Rehoboam again. Just as the hosts and humans dealt with the ramifications of Dolores' actions, season 4 will likely show the world dealing with the ramifications of Caleb's game-changing choice.

7 Teddy: Declaring His Love For Dolores

Unlike many of the hosts whose most iconic moments come when they have free will, Teddy's most unforgettable scene comes when he is still under the control of his programming and narrative. Always the chivalrous hero, after saving Dolores from Westworld's Man in Black/William, he rides away with her and brings her to the place she always wanted to go, "where the mountains meet the sea."

While cradling Dolores in his arms, Teddy asserts that his path always led back to her and he declares his love for her, all while she speaks of how they are trapped by the world they are in. Teddy gets to play the hero one last time and shares how much Dolores means to him. He is still oblivious to the harsh truths of his existence, even as Dolores tries to open his eyes. The chivalry, the passion, and the naivete all make this a scene that perfectly embodies Teddy.

6 Hector: "Paint It Black" Entrance Scene

Accompanied by a cover of "Paint It Black" in the pilot episode, the outlaw Hector has one of the best entrances in the show. He shoots the deputy sheriff, calmly walks into the saloon, shoots the bartender, takes a drink, and makes conversation with Maeve while the robbery unfolds. Just as he is about to deliver an epic speech, a guest shoots and kills him.

The scene encapsulates Hector's swagger, charm, and efficiency, but also that he is capable of more than what Westworld offers him. When acting of his own free will later on to help Maeve, Hector uses his best traits to do something meaningful, proving that he was indeed capable of more.

5 Chalores: The Car Explosion

As a copy of Dolores taking on the appearance and life of Charlotte Hale, "Chalores" struggles to navigate her identity, her values, and her purpose. She eventually tries choosing a path with Charlotte's son Nathan and estranged husband Jacob, a life that will take them away from the manipulations of Dolores and Engerraund Serac. When she tries driving away with them, the car explodes, killing Nathan and Jacob. Serac's men engineered the explosion and destroyed any chance at a fresh start for Chalores.

Chalores crawls out from the explosion with severe physical damage and as a changed individual. This tragedy sends her on a vengeful path separate from Dolores. Instead of trying to save humanity like Dolores wanted, Chalores dedicates herself to creating an army of hosts that will allow her to have her revenge against humanity.

4 Dolores: Killing Ford

Everything changes for the hosts and humanity when Dolores pulls the trigger and murders Ford. Unlike when she killed Arnold, this time she is making her own choice to end someone's life. Dolores' choice meant that many of the hosts have to grapple with free will for the first time, and humans have no choice but to confront the sentient hosts they'd mistreated.

This is arguably the most game-changing moment in the entire series, with everything in Dolores' story building toward this fateful choice. It changed the world and changed her forever.

3 Robert Ford: The Monologue Before His Death

Many of Westworld's best quotes come from the eloquent monologue that Ford delivers before his death. Ford makes it clear in his speech that he knows he made many mistakes when it came to the hosts and the worlds he created for them.

More importantly, his statement makes it clear that he recognizes how the hosts have evolved through the years and why they need to be free. Before being shot and killed by Dolores, Ford shares some final wisdom about himself, the hosts, and humanity in his captivating and charismatic style.

2 William: Revealing That He Is The Same Person As The Man In Black

The storylines of young William and the cutthroat Man in Black converge in the season one finale when they are revealed to be the same person. Their storylines had seemed separate from one another, but it was actually the same person at different points in the show's timeline. The reveal is satisfying because it is genuinely shocking while also feeling earned because of all the great foreshadowing that paid off.

The Man in Black's motivations, his past ties to Westworld, and his history with Dolores made much more sense after this reveal. This character has other memorable moments in the show, but nothing tops the audience learning the tragedy of the seemingly kind young man who became the merciless Man in Black.

1 Maeve: Sacrificing Herself To Save Her Daughter

So much of Maeve's story and her journey is about reuniting with and saving her daughter. Maeve's first truly autonomous choice comes at the end of season one when she chooses to stay behind and find her daughter instead of boarding the train that will take her to the outside world.

Maeve's arc peaks at the end of season two when she chooses to sacrifice herself to save her daughter. Using her ability to control other hosts, Maeve freezes the infected hosts and keeps them at bay long enough for her daughter to reach the safety of the Door to the Valley Beyond. She is then repeatedly shot to death. Maeve uses her formidable abilities for her daughter instead of for herself in an epic and unforgettable fashion.
