Warner Bros. TV has responded to Ruby Rose’s Batwoman on-set allegations. Rose was initially the star of The CW's Batwoman show, which began in 2019. The actress portrayed the Kate Kane version of Batwoman, one of the first openly gay superheroes in DC's Bat-family. Rose played the character for one season before being replaced in season 2 with a new character wearing the cowl, Ryan Wilder, as played by Javicia Leslie. Rumors swirled that Rose had quit the show due to behind-the-scenes drama, but today Rose hit back with her own allegations against the studio.
Rose took to Instagram today, alleging on-set issues that caused her to leave the show, including unsafe working conditions, sexual misconduct, unprofessional behavior, and more. The actress specifically names showrunner Caroline Dries and executive producers Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter, as well as former WB TV President Peter Roth, as the culprits behind the Batwoman drama and her eventual exit from the show. The actress went on to say that she did not quit the show and that "they" "ruined" the character of Kate Kane and "destroyed" Batwoman.
Now, WB TV is hitting back against the former Batwoman actress and her allegations, releasing a statement (via Deadline), that outlines their explanation for her exit and the on-set allegations against her. WB says that the company had decided not to "exercise its option to engage Ruby for season two of Batwoman" due to "multiple complaints about workplace behavior" which was "extensively reviewed and handled privately." This is not the first time that Rose's own behavior on-set has been brought up, but with both sides pointing fingers it's difficult to ascertain where the truth lies. Read WB's statement below:
Since exiting Batwoman, Rose has stayed fairly busy, starring in the action films The Doorman with Jean Reno, SAS: Red Notice with Andy Serkis, as well as Vanquish with Morgan Freeman. She recently wrapped The Yacht with Frank Grillo and has a number of additional projects lined up. Rose made a name for herself with roles in shows like Orange is the New Black and films like xXx: Return of Xander Cage and John Wick: Chapter Two, which eventually led to her casting as Batwoman.
With so many allegations going back-and-forth between Rose and the studio, it's difficult to get the pulse of what really went down on the set of Batwoman during Rose's tenure. With private investigations, individual video recordings and documentation, as well as social media campaigns to share the "truth" about it all, it boils down to a he-said-she-said at this juncture. Somewhere between the lines is the actual truth, but whether that's ever brought to light remains to be seen. As with any legitimate accusation, an investigation should be held to see if there was any wrongdoing, however much of this Batwoman drama appears to be more of a professional clash between star and studio, which is something for them to resolve, rather than the digital pitchforks of Twitter and Instagram.
