After being considered for the role of Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Regé-Jean Page most likely has a promising future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Adam Warlock was initially mentioned in the mid-credit scene of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, when Ayesha, the Sovereign’s Golden High Priestess, wanted to create a being who can finally defeat the ragtag team of heroes. In the years that followed, many names have been attached to the character, including Zac Efron and Garrett Hedlund. Finally, news broke — confirmed by director James Gunn himself — that Will Poulter has been cast to play Adam Warlock. However, despite this revelation, this doesn't necessarily mean the end of Page's involvement in the MCU.
After portraying Eustace Scrubb in the fantasy film The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Will Poulter then went on to star in the crime comedy We’re the Millers, the film series Maze Runner, and the interactive film Bandersnatch from the anthology series Black Mirror. When his casting as Adam Warlock was announced, another report revealed that the role was in demand for several young actors, and that Marvel has been casting for the past couple of months. Although there was no official list of auditionees released, among the actors reportedly in the final running were 1917’s George MacKay and Bridgerton's Regé-Jean Page.
Despite Page eventually losing out to Poulter, his future in the comic-book franchise is looking positive, especially since Marvel has a history of repurposing actors who have auditioned for a different role. After all, with the extent of the MCU, the studio is extremely selective on who gets to embody their iconic characters. The fact that Regé-Jean Page was considered for a role that has been years in the making means that he is now on Marvel’s radar and will surely be considered in upcoming projects. Perhaps, the studio will even find ways to work with him. Needless to say, auditioning — or just getting considered — for a role in the MCU can already have a significant impact on any actor’s career.
For instance, Chris Pratt, who was then still a part of Parks and Recreation, originally auditioned for Captain America. Ultimately, Chris Evans landed the part, but Pratt’s audition led him to meet Marvel’s casting director Sarah Finn, who eventually recommended him for his Guardians of the Galaxy starring role. Similarly, the late Chadwick Boseman went to an audition for Drax. Sarah Finn also recalled Boseman exuding elegance and dignity when he tried out for the part, but this portrayal was far from Drax’s nature. More than a year later, when the pre-production for Captain America: Civil War started, Boseman was instantly called in to play the king’s role. Additionally, while it might be difficult to see anyone but Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger, at first, he tried to audition for the role of Sam Wilson/ Falcon. Obviously, Anthony Mackie was cast, but this move led him to play Black Panther’s well-received antagonist.
As the Marvel Cinematic Universe ushers in a new phase, one involving multiverses and alternate timelines, there is no telling just which characters will be introduced. With the dozens of Marvel projects still in development, Regé-Jean Page remains a strong casting choice, especially after his Adam Warlock audition. Although it may be too late for an appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the future still looks bright for one of Britain's leading young actors.
