Outlander: 10 Unpopular Opinions About Jamie (According To Reddit)

Jamie Fraser from the epic fantasy drama Outlander might just be the most swashbuckling hero on popular television. But that doesn't mean that there aren't a few fans out there whose opinions don't contradict the general adoration of the handsome Scotsman.

These opinions on Reddit are not necessarily against Jamie, but throw up a few new ideas that haven't been entertained by fans before. The Redditors might also wonder what would have happened had certain things in the series worked out differently. All in all, here are a few perspectives that might give the millions of fans whose affection Jamie has captured some food for thought.

10 Jamie & Claire Are Unlucky For One Another

Redditor awkwardOttakam feels that Claire and Jamie are "sickly unlucky for each other, and just take turns to cause trouble for the other..."

While it is true that the epic couple goes gallivanting around and lands knee-deep in trouble all the time, it would perhaps be unfair to suggest that they are bad for each other and even unlucky. Though divided by a couple of centuries, these two represent the fieriest love story ever, and if they do get into trouble, that is their destiny. Together, Claire and Jamie only make each other stronger, making this fan's opinion pretty unusual.

9 Jamie & Claire Use People

Along similar lines runs an opinion by missm0011 states that Jamie and Claire "constantly lie to people, use people, and put them in danger".

Once again, the couple usually fights for what they believe is right and fair. Claire, especially, is simply the strongest female Outlander character with strong opinions and modern viewpoints, and Jamie has been shown to be supportive of her throughout. This is a couple, most fans would agree, that has been thrust into something unique and fantastic, and they do the best they can given the situation, trying to help people and bring changes in the future in the past.

8 Jamie Didn't Treat Claire Right In Paris

Jamie, according to Redditor Freshman5000, didn't treat Claire right during his time in Paris. The fan admits that the dashing Scot "is going THROUGH IT in season two, dealing with assault and PTSD" following the traumatic events of Wentworth Prison in season 1. But he feels that Jamie's anger at Claire when she started working at the hospital while running off to duel with Randall himself seemed unjustified.

Jamie's frustration with Claire was certainly unfair but as the fan does admit, what he was going through at the time was beyond belief. He wasn't thinking straight because he was obsessed with the idea of revenge on Black Jack Randall. As a character, Jamie is nigh perfect, but there could still be moments when he appears a tad flawed. If anything, it only makes him a bit more flesh and blood.

7 Jamie Doesn't Look His Age Anymore

Reddit user hellssbellsss makes a rather hilarious, but uncommon observation about how Jamie looks so much younger than the purported age of his character in the series. The user asks "Am I really supposed to believe Jamie is 50 years old?", and truth be told, this isn't something anyone can really disagree with.

However, while Jamie does make for an exceptionally gorgeous 50 year old, actor Sam Heughan has done an excellent job pulling off the role of the dashing Highlander. The character has aged naturally for fans who have followed his journey from season 1, and realistic or not, fans aren't complaining.

6 Jamie & Claire's Sex Scenes Have Become Gratuitous

GenXGeekGirl isn't impressed by all the steam that the show has brought to audiences across the world. The sex scenes, the fan states, were fine at the beginning, but it gets gratuitous, "sometimes painful to watch".

Whether they annoy this fan or not, most would agree that the love scenes, shot aesthetically, add to the intensity of the story. They reinforce the insane chemistry between the actors without being titillating, as well as reiterating the reasons that Jamie and Claire are soulmates on Outlander. As the characters have matured, so has the romance.

5 Jamie Is Objectified Throughout The Series

In a truly surprising opinion, hereforthevibesyo on Reddit mentions that Jamie has been "disturbingly objectified throughout the series..." and that he was nothing but a one-dimensional character in the first season where he was mainly Claire's love interest.

It's impossible to deny that the series is replete with steamy scenes, and the opinion is unpopular only because not many would have approached those scenes the way this Redditor has. However, it would be controversial to call him one-dimensional. He might not have a lot of shades to his personality but he is layered all the same, and he's capable of an entire gamut of emotions.

4 Jamie Betrayed Claire

Jamie had married Laoghaire, one of the most hated Outlander characters, by the time Claire returned to the 18th century after Frank's death. Posted by Je Suis Prest, a Reddit thread discusses that marrying the woman who had almost got Claire killed during the terrifying witch trial was an act of outright betrayal of Claire Fraser. "What Jamie did was despicable...", the user vents.

While no fan can say that they were elated at Jamie marrying Laoghaire, it can at least be said that Jamie had literally had no hope of ever seeing Claire again and with time, characters mature. After years of being alone, even Laoghaire might have seemed like a potential partner, and Jamie wouldn't have refused when Jenny ensured their match.

3 Jamie & McNabb

In a rather offbeat observation, user treehugg3r1989 wonders if fans would have reacted the same way as they did to Laoghaire's wedding to Jamie had he married the widow McNabb with whom he had at least one sexual encounter. "Would we as viewers be as vehement that he should leave her behind?", the user asks.

Fans feel that they would have been more open to McNabb and Jamie, as they didn't have any bitter feelings against Mary in the first place. Mary McNabb hadn't been set up as Claire's rival and hadn't tried to get her killed as Laoghaire had, and thus they wouldn't necessarily be in favor of Jamie leaving her the moment Claire reappeared in his life.

2 Jamie & Claire Don't Always Make Sense

In a massively unpopular opinion, handle2019 feels that the lovers' relationship doesn't always make sense, particularly since the couple fails to communicate with each other. "I am just sometimes a little confused by ‘Clamie’", 'Clamie' being a portmanteau of the protagonists' names.

Seeing how the couple's romance is the heart of this epic love story, this view goes thoroughly against the grain of the majority who absolutely adore the couple, and would readily forgive them any flaws or lack of realism. For the drooling Outlander fans, Jamie and Claire practically define relationship goals.

1 Jamie Lacks Curiosity About The Future

Finally, here's a Redditor who expresses astonishment at the fact that Jamie Fraser seems rather uninterested in the future--"Doesn't he wonder what the world looks like 200 years from then?" In spite of knowing that his wife is from the future, he only ever brings up the future very sparingly and doesn't seem particularly staggered by things that should ideally leave his mind boggled.

The popular opinion here is that Jamie does express interest in a few things here and there, such as airplanes and photographs. But he doesn't dwell too much on the developments of the future, or at least the author doesn't, as they are really beyond Jamie's comprehension having been born 200 years in the past.
