Oscars 2019: Ranking All The Best Picture Nominees By IMDb

The 2019 Oscars saw some tight competition in the Best Picture category as a dynamic variety of films were nominated, all with extreme acclaim. Best Picture nominations are reserved for some of the most elite movies of each year, but do the IMDb ratings of the 2019 nominees reflect that status?

Each film has a significantly high rating, and many of them are rated quite similarly to each other as well. Although there is such a small margin of positive ratings, IMDb users have ultimately deemed some of the 2019 Best Picture nominees better than others.

8 Vice - 7.2

Among all the 2019 Best Picture nominees, Adam McKay's Vice is rated the lowest, but not by very much. The biographical comedy tells the story of former United States Vice President Dick Cheney and his power over President George W. Bush while the duo was in office. The film is full of dedicated performances, including that of Christian Bale as Dick Cheney himself, Steve Carell, Amy Adams, and Sam Rockwell as George W. Bush.

Although Dick Cheney is not Christian Bale's best role, he did go through a major physical transformation in order to look like the former VP. Notably, Vice won the Oscar that year for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, but lost the seven other awards it was nominated for. While the Academy gave Vice many acknowledgments, it is clear that IMDb users agree the film falls short overall compared to the other Best Picture nominees of 2019.

7 Black Panther - 7.3

Following the action-packed story of T'Challa and his rise to the throne within the fictional African kingdom of Wakana, Marvel's Black Panther was one of the most talked about movies of the year, and to this day it is still regarded as one of the greatest superhero movies of all time. And yet, the film is surprisingly rated lower than most of the 2019 Best Picture nominees.

Still, Black Panther made major waves for representation of the Black community in film as well as Oscar history being the first Marvel movie nominated for the Best Picture category. Earning seven total nominations that year, Black Panther won the Oscar for Best Original Score, Best Costume Design, and Best Production Design.

6 BlacKkKlansman - 7.5

BlacKkKlansman is the biopic of Ron Stallworth, a Black police officer who went undercover as a member of the Ku Klux Klan during the 1970s. Starring John David Washington, Adam Driver, and Topher Grace, the film was met with mixed reviews by critics, but it has received a fairly successful score from IMDb users.

Although it might not quite measure up to some other 2019 Best Picture nominations based on audience response, BlacKkKlansman received six Oscar nominations. It won for Best Adapted Screenplay, earning acclaimed filmmaker Spike Lee his very first Oscar win after over 40 years in the industry.

5 The Favourite - 7.5

The similar ratings continue with The Favorite, a darkly comedic lesbian period piece directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. It follows the utterly bitter Queen Anne (Olivia Colman), her loyal lover (Rachel Weisz), and brand new servant (Emma Stone) who stirs the pot amongst the Queen's court.

While the rating is mediocre in comparison to others, The Favourite received the highest total Oscar nominations of all the Best Picture nominees. Still, despite having a whopping ten nominations, Olivia Colman took home the film's only win that night for Best Actress in a Leading Role.

4 A Star Is Born - 7.6

2018 saw the newest of many remakes of the classic story A Star Is Born, the dramatic and romantic tale of a young starlet taken under the wing of a famous musician. Starring, written, directed, and produced by Bradley Cooper, the film was met with high acclaim and eight Oscar nominations. This was a surprisingly high number given that it was Cooper's directorial debut and one of pop star Lady Gaga's first major feature films.

A Star Is Born is rated on the higher end of all the 2019 Best Picture nominees, but it did not perform as well during the Oscars ceremony when it too only won a single award. It was, however, a huge success for Lady Gaga who earned her first Oscar win with Best Original Song.

3 Roma - 7.7

One of the main frontrunners of the 2019 Oscars was Alfonso Cuarón's Roma, the raw, emotional story of a maid in Mexico during the 1970s. Tied with The Favourite for the most nominations that year at ten, Roma made history for streaming services as the first Netflix film nominated in the Best Picture category.

While it did not win Best Picture, Roma did win three other major awards that night, including Best Foreign Language Film, Best Director, and Best Cinematography. The film's rating is also similar to many of the other Best Picture nominees of 2019, but it appropriately falls on the higher end considering its accolades from The Academy.

2 Bohemian Rhapsody - 7.9

Bohemian Rhapsody being so highly rated among IMDb users may not be a shock given how the film swept the competition during the 2019 award season. The biopic about rock band Queen's fabulous front man Freddie Mercury wowed critics and audiences alike.

Interestingly, Bohemian Rhapsody was the least nominated Best Picture nominee of 2019, and yet it won the more Oscars than any other film that year. The film lost Best Picture, but won all four other awards it was nominated for, including Best Actor in a Leading Role (Rami Malek), Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing.

1 Green Book - 8.2

Fittingly, the 2019 winner for Best Picture is also the highest rated of all the nominees. Green Book is a road trip drama that follows a Black pianist and his tour driver during 1960s America. It was nominated for five Oscars and won three of them, the other two being Best Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali) and Best Original Screenplay.

As expressed by many voices on the internet at the time, Green Book's Best Picture win was criticized, and the film has met mixed reviews overall. However, according to IMDb ratings, Green Book makes sense as the rightful winner of the Best Picture title.
