New Marvel Comic Coming From Superstars Jonathan Hickman, Chris Bachalo

Writer Jonathan Hickman will not be departing Marvel for good after he leaves X-Men as previously theorized. Though he may go down as the single most influential writer of the X-Men franchise in the 21st Century, it has been announced that Hickman, along with longtime ace artist Chris Bachalo, with whom he previously collaborated on the 2019 anthology one-shot Amazing Spider-Man: Full Circle, will be working together once again on a new mystery book.

Hickman’s role in the X-Men franchise has been a remarkable one since taking the reins in 2019 with Dawn of X, coming into his own as the “showrunner” behind the fantastic, if not bizarre, new phase of the X-Men as a sovereign nation upon the living island of Krakoa. Rampant with resurrections, space adventures and political intrigue, Hickman’s X-Men has proven to be an off-the-wall take that struck home with fans for its depth and intricate, if not wildly sprawling storytelling. While the upcoming X-titles crossover Inferno is slated to be his last for the franchise, it will not be his last for the company, as Hickman himself recently revealed.

Despite fears that he might be leaving the company along with an exodus of talent to more independent pastures, according to reports from Bleeding Cool, Hickman has inadvertently revealed a future project at Marvel featuring himself and Bachalo. Hickman revealed the project on a livestream with his future indie project 3 Worlds 3 Moons collaborator Mike Huddlestone. Bachalo’s abstract, hyperkinetic style would likely go well with Hickman’s brand of fantastically speculative action-psychedelia, and the move seems to suggest a smaller scale for Hickman than the grand epic storytelling he employed during his run on X-Men.

In anticipation, fans have already begun speculating on Reddit that the new mystery book will be a Spider-Man series, which, given Bachalo’s longtime history on the series, would make sense. Bachalo had previously taken on art duties for Non-Stop Spider-Man, which ran into delays during the coronavirus pandemic, not least because Bachalo himself came down with the virus. Bachalo is no stranger to the intricate style Hickman employs in building his narratives over time, having illustrated one of the similarly comprehensive Grant Morrison’s New X-Men arcs in 2003 as well as the pulse-pounding Ultimate War miniseries in 2002 by Mark Millar. While only time will tell the quality in the fruits of the labors, it is an interesting team-up to say the least.

What new explosive stories will Jonathan Hickman and Chris Bachalo have in store for fans of Marvel Comics? Only time will tell. His last X-Men series, Inferno, is set to wrap up in early 2022.
