Josh Brolin Compares Marvel & Dune Filming Experiences

Josh Brolin is looking back on his experiences with both Marvel and Dune and assessing how they stack up against each other. For much of the MCU's Infinity Saga, Brolin's Thanos loomed large over each movie, even though Brolin himself didn't appear until 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy. His two biggest showcases arrived in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, where he served as the ultimate big bad for all Marvel heroes. Though he met his end in Endgame, Brolin recently lent his voice to the animated series What If...? and played Thaos once more. Plus, he appeared in Deadpool 2 as Cable.

Since largely moving on from the MCU, Brolin has touched down in another major sci-fi universe: Dune. He's one of the many A-list actors populating Denis Villeneuve's highly-anticipated adaptation, which finally arrives in theaters and on HBO Max this upcoming weekend. Brolin plays Gurney Halleck, weapons master for House Atreides. Dune has already begun to roll out overseas and has racked up over $100 million so far at the box office. With largely positive reviews and Villeneuve's impressive track record bolstering it, Dune is so far riding high.

Brolin isn't the only member of the Dune cast to have spent time in the MCU, but he's the one who reflected on the two recently with ComicBook.comThe actor didn't pick a favorite (though he did speak very highly of his experience with Dune), but considered both properties' approach to spoilers and sets. Though Marvel and Dune are both sci-fi, they couldn't be more different when it came to filming. Brolin said:

"[They give you] everything. There was none of that, and by the way, they did with Marvel also, the only thing with Marvel is once in a while, I started to pick up on why do they keep changing it when we get to the set? Because they would release pages to make you think it was one thing, and then you would change it and do it, that was annoying. But with this, it's all out there, you have a book, you have source material, it's kind of tough to hide it, even though it's a very loyal adaptation, there's some things that are changed, there's some things that are ad-lib, there's some things that are created for... Because it kind of has its own life, but no. And it's all practical, we're on sets that you're looking at, you're in the middle of these massive sets, the production design was on a massive scale, whereas Marvel, it's kind of up to your imagination, both are equally fascinating and deserve a lot of focus, but very different."

On the point of spoilers, Brolin makes a fair point. Dune's story has been out in the world for decades now, and many audience members are well aware of all the twists and turns it takes. The MCU, while being based on comic books, differs greatly from the source material and works hard to keep everything a secret. That can make things harder for the actors, who are often kept in the dark themselves about the various plot twists. After being at the center of two of Marvel's most secretive movies, Brolin likely appreciates moving on to a project that is already pretty well-known.

Each experience seems to have had its own set of obstacles, and it's interesting to hear Brolin compare the two. Now one has to wonder what his fellow Dune/Marvel co-stars think; for example, Zendaya and Dave Bautista might have some thoughts of their own. Brolin seems to have a slight preference for Dune's filming setup, but that could also be because his character didn't require much CGI this time. Nevertheless, he's made his mark on two different franchises, and that's pretty special.
