Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista say they both geeked out upon meeting for the first time at Comic-Con. The pair are currently awaiting the US release of Denis Villeneuve's upcoming film, Dune, in which Momoa plays Duncan Idaho and Bautista plays Beast Rabban Harkonnen. They have also worked together on the production of Apple TV's sci-fi series, See.
Aside from Dune and See, Momoa is hard at work on his DCEU superhero sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, alongside Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, Dolph Lundgren, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Meanwhile, Bautista is set to make his return as Drax the Destroyer in Marvel's Thor: Love and Thunder, joining Chris Hemsworth and his Guardians of the Galaxy co-stars Chris Pratt and Karen Gillan. Despite carving out places for themselves in opposing comic-book franchises, Momoa and Bautista have expressed a great desire to work together on other projects. In particular, the pair have spoken about their hopes to collaborate on a buddy-cop film, and are reportedly in the process of making that dream a reality.
Now, in an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, both Momoa and Bautista shared the details of when they met. Revealing that their first encounter was at Comic-Con, Momoa admitted, "we both geeked out on each other." Asked if anyone had borne witness to their interaction, Bautista replied, "it was kind of a behind-the-curtain thing." Check out the full clip in the Tweet below:
The pair have been open about their close friendship and eagerness to collaborate. Recently, Momoa said that Bautista's buddy-cop film was already off the ground after texting him about the idea. While an obvious real-life chemistry exists between them, setting the foundations for any good film in the genre, it will be interesting to see how their future characters will cope with the inevitable, archetypical tension required to make them a compelling pair. Still, See demonstrates that Momoa and Bautista can set aside their friendship when an on-screen conflict is required.
With their concept supposedly taking inspiration from Lethal Weapon, it bodes well that neither star is a stranger to the action genre. Indeed, both Bautista and Momoa may be able to push the limits on many action-tailored projects, given their prior experience on high octane superhero sets. Their joint experience sets the bar of expectation slightly higher than normal, but with the fanbases both stars already bring with them, the fervour was likely to be high to begin with.
