With the company becoming a recognizable name and looking ahead by scheduling Scott Derrickson's The Black Phone for a February 2022 release, Blum has recently sat down to discuss what has made the company a success.
In an interview with CBR, Blum was asked what makes Blumhouse different when compared to other studios. The founder responded by saying that unlike other companies of a similar size, Blumhouse has developed a recognizable brand. He then compared the studio to companies such as Marvel, Pixar, and Disney, saying each company has its own brand. "Overall, I think the other thing that's very unique about the company is that there are not many companies in entertainment that really have a brand. I think Blumhouse really has a brand. I think Marvel has a brand. I think Pixar, I think Disney, I think those companies have a brand. They're just a wee bit bigger than us. I think for a small company, it's very unusual to have a brand like that, and I think that we do."
With several successes, Blumhouse has become a recognizable and prominent name in the modern horror movie landscape. In 2021 alone, the company aims to release ten horror films, including the upcoming Halloween Kills, which Blum hopes to develop more sequels for following the conclusion of the planned trilogy. The company has also produced numerous television series based on The Purge and Upgrade. Despite this, Blumhouse hasn't limited themselves to solely horror, with the company having produced Academy Award-nominated films such as BlacKkKlansman and Whiplash.
With Blumhouse having become one of the biggest names in the horror genre, it is undeniable that the company has developed its own brand. The company made its name with smaller, more personal, creator-driven horror usually set within a small cast or limited range of locations. Despite the studio and the franchises it helped create becoming bigger and more expansive, many of its films still carry those early recognizable traits, with 2018's Halloween forgoing the series sequels to focus on Laurie Strode's struggles against Michael Myers alongside her family. Blumhouse has undoubtedly created a brand audiences recognize.
