In the first battle of DC vs Marvel, the World's Mightiest Mortal Shazam stood no chance against the Asgardian God of Thunder and Lightning, Thor. Forced to battle for the fate of either universe, these magically empowered heroes found themselves evenly matched in strength and honor. However, it was Thor who used his iconic Mjolnir to tip the odds in his favor once he learned the source of Shazam's power, specifically the lightning bolt that allows Billy Batson to transform into the former Captain Thunder.
In the famous crossover series by Peter David, Ron Marz, Dan Jurgens, and Claudio Castellini, a series of dimensional breaches between both universes results in characters being swapped across the dimensions. As this creates a wide variety of situations typically ending in conflict, everyone learns this is because two beyond omnipotent entities representing each universe have learned of their "brother's" existence. Uncomfortable with this equal level of power, these entities decide to have a contest pitting hand-selected Marvel and DC champions against each other to see which dimension deserves to live and which one will be wiped from existence.
In Marvel vs DC #2, the contest begins with Thor Odinson meeting Shazam, previously known as DC's Captain Marvel, who understands what is at stake. After giving each other a moment of silence to pray to whichever god they prefer, the battle commences with both heroes trading blows while deliberating how to end the situation without unnecessary casualties. When it becomes clear that they're both equally matched in strength and unwilling to concede defeat, Shazam tries something unexpected by uprooting a gigantic Ferris Wheel and throwing it at Thor. Using Mjolnir, Thor redirects the signature amusement park ride back toward his opponent, the crash and debris pinning Shazam indefinitely. Believing any sort of pause would affect his chances to win, Shazam calls down his signature lightning to transform back to Billy Batson, a move that seals his doom.

On paper, this battle may not seem very challenging considering the similarities between Thor and Shazam. Both possess powers derivative of godliness, both have human alter-egos' they switch from constantly, both have been heavyweight members of premier superhero teams and finally, they are both associated with lightning which became the DC hero's downfall. Billy Batson has to say the wizard Shazam's name to summon the lightning bolt that brings about his adult superhero form and Thor is the Asgardian god associated with thunder, lightning, and storms among other things. As Shazam, Billy is capable of holding his own against Thor but his muscular form became a hindrance when he was immobilized by debris. He transformed back so he'd be able to escape but this not only exposed his true form to Thor but also the secret of his transformation, something he could not only manipulate but also control.
Although Billy Batson said the magic word, Thor throws his hammer Mjolnir in the path of the bolt of lightning that the God of Thunder chooses not to bestow his opponent with. In a blast that knocks both Thor and Batson to their feet, it would appear that Thor has won as Billy doesn't have the power to continue their fight. Although it temporarily cost Thor the use of Mjolnir, DC vs Marvel saw its first victory as Shazam learned who the real god of lightning is.
