BOTW Cucco Attack Teaches Unaware Player About Classic Zelda Feature

An unsuspecting Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild player has learned about the series’ classic Cucco attacks the hard way. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild may well be over four years old now, but fans are still constantly discovering BOTW’s hidden details and happening upon unexpected surprises to this day.

Cuccos have been a long-standing tradition within Nintendo’s celebrated Legend of Zelda games. These seemingly docile chicken creatures can turn incredibly violent when provoked by Link, flocking en masse to defend their injured kin if the player subjects any one cucco to a prolonged period of attack. This onslaught from the Zelda chickens has become endearingly known as the Cucco Revenge Squad amongst fans. With the exception of the Game Boy version of Link’s Awakening, these cuccos are indestructible. Often, the only means of escape is for players to heroically flee inside a building within the vicinity or leave the area entirely.

However, despite cuccos being present in most Legend of Zelda games since A Link to the Past, one Breath of the Wild player was not aware of this amusing series mechanic. Redditor antny-p shared a clip of them playing BOTW titled “WHY WAS I NEVER TOLD ABOUT THIS.” This video shows Link in Kakariko Village, where he naively proceeds to hack and slash at a flock of cuccos. Needless to say, this does not end well for antny-p and Link. After a brief period of calm, antny-p’s Link is soon inundated by angry cuccos aggressively flapping and pecking at him.

In spite of the initial terror, antny-p gets off relatively lightly with this particular Breath of the Wild cucco attack, as they only lose one heart in total. There have been many instances in the Zelda series’ 35 years where cucco attacks have proved fatal for the player thanks to the unrelenting and indestructible nature of the cucco. This often gives cuccos the reputation of being one of the Zelda series’ more intimidating adversaries, despite them not technically being a conventional enemy at all.

While there is clearly plenty of amusement to be found within the current Zelda games, fans are still awaiting more news on Breath of the Wild’s upcoming sequel. There is extraordinary little actually known about the fan dubbed “BOTW 2,” but given the impact that Breath of the Wild has had on so many, expectations are high. While enemies such as Stone Taluses and Bokoblins have already been seen in the trailers for BOTW 2, there is yet to be any indication that cuccos will also be making their return in the sequel. Given its iconic status however, it wouldn’t be hard to assume that the Cucco Revenge Squad will once more return to players’ screens in 2022 along with heroes Link and Princess Zelda.
