This has been a historic week for the Big Brother franchise, so it's time to recap the biggest news that broke in the last few days. Recently, the fans had been keeping up with Big Brother 23 as it approached its finale. A few weeks ago, the Cookout made history on the show by having six Black contestants reach the final six in the competition together. This guaranteed that Big Brother would finally have its first-ever Black winner.
Alas, there was still a lot of build-up and uncertainty prior to the BB23 finale. For one, some viewers were hoping for a shocking final episode where Azah Awasum pulled off a final Head of Household competition win and was able to cut Xavier in the final three. With that said, it quickly became clear that even Azah was willing to take X. to the end, so there was just no path for Xavier to lose the $750,000 grand prize.
Meanwhile, the fandom was also slightly divided when it came to picking a houseguest to win America's Favorite Player. Derek Xiao, who had been evicted on day 51, and Tiffany Mitchell, who was evicted during the second Double Eviction, were the two contestants in the lead to win AFP. Up until the grand finale, no one could safely predict which houseguest would win this title.
This week is all about celebrating Xavier and the accomplishments that he was able to pull off along with the Cookout alliance. On Wednesday, September 29, Xavier became the first-ever Black winner of Big Brother. In addition, Xavier won by a unanimous 9-0 jury vote, becoming only the third winner in history to accomplish that feat. In the past, only BB10 winner Dan Gheesling (7-0 jury vote) and BB22 winner Cody Calafiore (9-0 jury vote) were able to win the show unanimously. Meanwhile, Xavier also took home the largest grand prize in the history of the show: $750,000.
The fans voted for a full week for a player to win the title of America's Favorite Houseguest on BB23. According to all the main polls online, Derek X. and Tiffany were leading the votes to win AFH/AFP. With that said, as it was shown in the High Roller's Room twist, the general public can sometimes vote differently from social media fans. Thankfully, Julie Chen announced Tiffany as America's Favorite Player - a result that the vast majority of the fandom can be happy about.
After being considered one of the frontrunners to win BB23 all season long, Kyland Young was blindsided by his biggest ally in the game, Xavier. Unbeknownst to Ky, X. convinced Derek Frazier to cast the sole vote to evict Kyland in the final four. This was a shock to both the viewers and Ky himself, but no one could've predicted what happened next. On his way out of the Big Brother house, Kyland questioned Xavier's move by bringing up very personal things X. had told him. On social media, Kyland's family issued a statement reacting to what Kyland said to Xavier. The family said that Ky clearly let the game get the best of him, but that he would certainly learn from his mistakes outside the house.
This was a very exciting week for longtime Big Brother fans. After all, history was made in many ways. Furthermore, the right people ended up winning the season and America's Favorite Houseguest, which is pretty rare for this show.
