Pirates have been popular in media since they themselves first existed. In earlier times, pirates were often depicted as villains, with good reason, but in more recent years, pirates have also been shown as sympathetic protagonists and antiheroes. Regardless, whether their goal is buried treasure, kidnapping, revenge, or simply enjoying a brew at the nearby inn, pirates are never far away from action and adventure.
In movies, pirates are depicted with varying personalities. Whilst the typical movie pirate could be a roaring buccaneer, some movie pirates are good-hearted and loyal, and others just want a taste of adventure. Either way, there is a movie pirate to fit every sign of the Zodiac.
12 Aries: Blackbeard (Blackbeard The Pirate)
A stereotypical pirate suits the Aries sign best due to their ferocity. And there is perhaps no pirate more fierce than Blackbeard. The infamous pirate's first movie appearance was in the 1952 movie, Blackbeard the Pirate, in which he is played by Robert Newton, who also played another famous pirate -- Long John Silver.
As befitting to the Aries sign, Blackbeard is fierce, assertive and a natural leader. What's more, Aries are described as pioneering, and it is fair to say that Blackbeard is the ultimate pioneer when it comes to famous pirates.
11 Taurus: Morgan Adams (Cutthroat Island)
The 1995 pirate movie Cutthroat Island is rather notorious, but perhaps for the wrong reasons. Despite being a swashbuckling adventure packed full of action, the movie was one of the biggest box office bombs of all time and received poorly by critics. As a result, it put an end to pirate movies until 2003, when the more successful Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl was released.
One of the movie's positive highlights is the protagonist, feisty pirate Morgan Adams. Played by Geena Davis, Morgan Adams fits the Taurus star sign due to her strength as a female leader, perseverance, and dependability.
10 Gemini: The Dread Pirate Roberts (The Princess Bride)
Whilst not a pirate-focused movie, cult classic The Princess Bride has more than its fair share of adventure, heroes, and swashbuckling scenes. Notable characters to fit this are Ignacio Montoya ("You killed my father. Prepare to die."), and Westley as the Dread Pirate Roberts, the movie's sole pirate.
What makes Dread Pirate Roberts befitting a Gemini is that he is not one person, but a name passed down to individuals over time. Geminis are flexible, responsive, and versatile, and what is more fitting of these traits than a pirate that isn't just one person?
9 Cancer: Mr. Smee (Disney's Peter Pan)
It is fair to say that Mr. Smee in Disney's Peter Pan isn't exactly the most fearsome of either Disney villain sidekicks or pirates. Yet this certainly doesn't make him unlikeable. In fact, although he is more of a personal assistant than a buccaneer, Smee is undoubtedly a loyal shipmate -- that is, until the end of the movie when he is seen quietly leaving The Jolly Roger during the final battle.
Always cheerful and even-tempered, Smee is suited to the Cancer sign. Furthermore, those under the Cancer sign are nurturing, and Smee is always on hand to help Captain Hook, whether it's nursing him back to health or trying to rescue him from the Crocodile.
8 Leo: Long John Silver (Muppet Treasure Island)
Treasure Island is the ultimate pirate story of treasure and treachery, so it's only natural that the story has been adapted for the screen countless times. Perhaps the most famous and beloved version is the Muppets' take on the tale, which has won the hearts of many for its catchy songs, hilarious one-liners, and Tim Curry's fantastic portrayal of the villainous pirate, Long John Silver.
Leos have a flair for the dramatic and are fiery in nature, which suits this version of Silver perfectly, well-demonstrated in one of the best songs of Muppet Treasure Island, "A Professional Pirate." And although his morals are unclear, there is no doubt that Silver is a warm and welcoming host to Jim Hawkins, another key trait in a Leo.
7 Virgo: Captain Nemo (20,000 Leagues Under The Sea)
Based on the classic science fiction story by Jules Verne, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea is one of Disney's earlier live-action movies. To look into rumors of a sea monster, an expedition sets out to investigate, in which they soon meet up with mysterious Captain Nemo and his crew on the submarine Nautilus.
Virgos are often seen as intelligent, and Nemo certainly displays this, having built the Nautilus on his own and showing a vast knowledge of sea life. Also akin to a Virgo, Nemo is also reserved and almost never shows emotion to those around him.
6 Libra: Captain Hector Barbossa (Pirates Of The Caribbean)
Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is easily the most famous of pirate movies in modern culture. Each one is full of adventure, action, and a number of memorable characters. One such character is Hector Barbossa, the former first mate of protagonist Jack Sparrow, and one of the Pirates of the Caribbean's most evil villains.
Although the villain of Curse of the Black Pearl, and a ruthless pirate captain in his own right, Barbossa fits the Libra sign because he goes by his word in parlay and agreements (even if he is quick to find loopholes), and usually knows when to play fair. What's more, he is sociable and can be a gentleman, which is also befitting of a Libra.
5 Scorpio: Scroop (Treasure Planet)
Another excellent version of Treasure Island is Disney's underrated animated feature, Treasure Planet. The movie sees the story set in space and is full of weird and unique alien creatures as characters, in particular, in Silver's mutinous crew. The most terrifying of these is the insectoid Scroop, who is easily the real villain of the movie.
Determination, focus, and being psychological are traits in a Scorpio, and Scroop easily demonstrates all of these. Unlike Silver, who does ultimately have a good heart, deep down, the villainous Scroop is driven in getting the treasure no matter what the cost, and isn't afraid to call out Silver for being "soft" on Jim Hawkins.
4 Sagittarius: Pirate Captain (Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists)
Aardman's stop motion movie, Pirates! In An Adventure with Scientists, is a swashbuckling story that is the perfect mixture of action, adventure, heart, and humor. It follows the misadventures of the good-hearted yet slightly dim-witted Pirate Captain and his misfit crew, as he strives to win the coveted Pirate of the Year award.
The extroverted Pirate Captain is a very likable protagonist and, with his optimism and enthusiasm as he attempts to win Pirate of the Year, he is rather apt for the Sagittarius sign. Furthermore, Sagittariuses are considered funny and Pirate Captain is certainly this, whether he means to be or not.
3 Capricorn: Captain Hook (Disney's Peter Pan)
The villainous Captain Hook is not only one of the most famous pirates in fiction but also one of Disney's most famous and popular villains. When not being made a fool of by the Crocodile, Hook can be a very ruthless and fearsome pirate. He did shoot one of his own crew simply for singing too loud, after all.
In his relentless quest to find Peter Pan's hideout and get rid of him, Hook's driven determination, tenacity, and focus make him a fitting Capricorn. Also, being the Captain of a crew of vicious pirates (and Smee), Hook demonstrates the Capricorn trait of being disciplined, as well.
2 Aquarius: Jack Sparrow (Pirates Of The Caribbean)
The roguish antihero, Jack Sparrow, has become one of Disney's most recent popular icons. Bought to life with immense drunken swagger and heart by Johnny Depp, Jack is easily one of the best things about the popular franchise. He practically steals every scene he is in and is undeniably a lovable rogue, as shown in both his funniest and saddest scenes.
Aquarians are known for their independence and eccentricities, both key and evident aspects of Jack overall. As well as this, Jack may also frequently be cool and detached from the situation, but he is assertive when called for, which are also all aspects of the Aquarius.
1 Pisces: Captain Shakespeare (Stardust)
Neil Gaiman's fairy tale, Stardust, was bought to the silver screen in 2007. Packed full of adventure and magic, it tells the story of a young man named Tristan's quest to bring back a star for his beloved. On the way home, they are captured by storm pirates, led by the ruthless Captain Shakespeare. Or at least, they think he's ruthless.
On the surface, Shakespeare appears to be a vicious cutthroat, but underneath, he is actually a kind and sensitive man who loves to make costumes. These traits, along with his compassion towards Tristen and Yvainne, make Captain Shakespeare an ideal Pisces.
