The martial arts ensemble Triple Threat landed in 2019, but what do we know about Triple Threat 2? Originating from a concept by one of the movie's leads, Tiger Chen, Triple Threat was positioned as an Asian take on The Expendables, and brought together Man of Tai Chi's Chen, Ong Bak's Tony Jaa, and Iko Uwais of The Raid movies, along with Scott Adkins, Michael Jai White, Jeeja Yanin, MMA champ Michael Bisping, and Ron Smoorenburg. With stunt veteran Jesse V. Johnson directing and Tim Man handling the action, Triple Threat was a must see movie for action fans in 2019.
In Triple Threat, Jaa and Chen portray mercenaries Payu and Long Fei, working on what they think is a rescue operation, only to be betrayed by their teammates, whose real goal was to free imprisoned terrorist Collins (Scott Adkins). The team then set their sights on Chinese philanthropist Xiao Xian (Celina Jade), whose activities threaten to eliminate organized crime in the city of Maha Jaya. Payu and Jaka end up joining forces with the crafty Jaka (Iko Uwais), on a vendetta after their teammates destroyed his village and killed his wife, to stop Collins and his crew.
With The Expendables 4 recently announced, Tony Jaa is set to join the crew. That makes it worth taking a look at where the other big ensemble he's been a key player in could head in its second installment. Here's everything we know right now about Triple Threat 2.
In an interview earlier this year on Scott Adkins' YouTube series The Art of Action, Tiger Chen revealed Triple Threat 2 is currently in the early writing stages, stating "We've been working on the story" for "half the year already." Chen elaborated that he's currently working to get the script and story of Triple Threat 2 to a place where everyone involved is on-board with the direction the sequel will take. While it's still in its infancy, Chen's comments nonetheless reveal that Triple Threat 2 is in its early beginnings.
As the titular trio of Triple Threat, Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, and Tiger Chen would be the main cast members to expect to respectively return as Payu, Jaka, and Long Fei. Celina Jade could also possibly come back as Xiao Xian, while Jesse V. Johnson could also return to direct the sequel. With Triple Threat being an ensemble on both the hero and villain sides, viewers should also expect Triple Threat 2 to go the John Wick: Chapter 4 route with various other well-known martial arts movie stars to appear with Jaa, Uwais, and Chen, either as allies or foes.
Triple Threat 2 could go in many different directions from its predecessor. With an old acquaintance of Payu's (Michael Wong) lending the heroes firepower ahead of the final showdown, their history could play a role in the sequel's story. Triple Threat 2 could also go a bit into Payu and Long Fei's backstory as mercenaries, too. Most assuredly, whatever adventure Triple Threat 2 takes Payu, Jaka, and Long Fei on will have them kicking plenty of butt along the way.
With Chen currently focused on getting the story in place, Triple Threat 2 is still a pretty fair distance from entering production. There's also the factor of the COVID-19 pandemic, and while film productions have resumed, they've had to navigate significant safety protocols, some even dealing with shutdowns like Mission: Impossible 7. Depending on when Triple Threat 2 gets underway, the pandemic could remain an unfortunate obstacle to navigate. With all of that in mind, 2023 or 2024 is probably the most realistic timeframe to expect Triple Threat 2.
