The Terminal List: Release Date, Cast & Story Details

The upcoming Amazon Studios production The Terminal List boasts an impressive cast and thrilling story, but what is known so far about the TV show? Amazon is always searching for more ways to compete with other popular streaming services such as Hulu and Netflix. After Chris Pratt's success with Amazon's The Tomorrow War, it seems sensible to want him back for another exciting action story. The Terminal List's popularity, bolstered by Pratt's appeal, can help the service gain even more viewership.

The show is based on Jack Carr's debut novel published in 2018, with the author's fast-paced stories quickly attracted large audiences. The Terminal List: A Thriller is the first in a five-book series, with the next installment scheduled to release in April 2022. This book follows Lieutenant Commander James Reece as he uncovers a government conspiracy while also struggling to untangle his traumatic memories.

The Terminal List has been praised for its realistic depictions of battle and military operations. According to his website (via Official Jack Carr), Carr has a background in Naval Special Warfare, which undoubtedly inspired his writing and helped lend an air of authenticity that made it so popular. Pratt's involvement in the upcoming show will only add to the popularity. Now that the TV adaptation is in the midst of production, here is everything revealed so far about The Terminal List.

Amazon has not yet announced an official release date for The Terminal List. Filming for the show began in March 2021 and rumors suggest it will have an early 2022 release. If these rumors are true, that will allow for some time between The Terminal List's premiere and other large-scale action projects such as The Lord of the Rings. It makes sense for Amazon to want to release its big action shows at different times of the year to be able to properly promote each of them. The Lord of the Rings series is expected to come out in September 2022, which gives some weight to an early 2022 release for The Terminal List.

Although Hollywood blockbusters such as Jurassic World and Guardians of the Galaxy elevated Chris Pratt’s popularity to new heights, he got his start on TV. Now, he returns to the small screen as James Reece in The Terminal List. His extensive experience with action-heavy stories should serve him well on the project, which he will also executive produce. Yet, since so many of Pratt's previous characters provided a bit of comic relief, it will be interesting to see him take on a more serious role.

The Terminal List also stars Constance Wu as war correspondent Katie Buranek, who is an ally for James. Riley Keough and Catherine Dyer play James's wife and mother-in-law, respectively. Other starring roles are played by Taylor Kitsch, Jai Courtney, and Jeanne Tripplehorn. Like Pratt, Kitsch’s filmography contains numerous action films, though Kitsch's are often less successful movies like John Carter and Battleship. In The Terminal List, he will be Ben Edwards, James's best friend. Courtney is also a seasoned action star after working on the two Suicide Squad films. In The Terminal List, Courtney is set to be a recurring antagonist to James as the billionaire Steve Horn.

In The Terminal List novel, an entire team of Navy SEALs is killed in an ambush except for the leader, James Reece. James returns home with conflicting flashbacks of the events until he learns that the ambush was not an attack from enemies, but a betrayal from his own government. James seeks revenge for the tragedy and endangers his family in the process.

Carr's involvement in the making of The Terminal List guarantees that even if the plot diverges from the book, it should still be relatively faithful to his vision. If nothing else, fans should look forward to exciting action sequences and high stakes. If Amazon learns from its missteps on Jack Ryan and other less successful projects, The Terminal List has a chance to be something spectacular. Reportedly, veterans make up half of the writing team as well as some of the staff. Their inclusion not only displays the showrunners' respect for them, but will also undoubtedly lead to a more meaningful show.
