Ted Lasso Season 2: Why Ted's Session With Dr. Sharon Isn't Directly Shown

Ted finally sits down for a proper therapy session with Dr. Sharon Fieldstone in Ted Lasso season 2 episode 7, but the conversation they have happens offscreen, leaving the details of Ted’s past still shrouded in mystery. Any fans have speculated as to Ted’s backstory, theorizing as to how his father passed away and why he carries such an unbridled external optimism despite so much internal strife. For now, those secrets will remain in the dark.

To be fair, none of Dr. Sharon’s sessions have been shown on screen so far in Ted Lasso season 2. Colin, Jamie, Dani and others have all gone into to see the psychologist off screen, and they’ve all come out better for it. But of course, none of those characters are the main focus of the show, which Ted is. So to have such a clear tease of new revelations about his backstory end with another offscreen appointment is understandably a bit disappointing.

The most obvious reason why Ted’s appointment isn’t shown is simply that the series is saving the details of his backstory for a later reveal. He’s the main character, and it wouldn’t necessarily be good pacing to reveal all the things he’d probably say in a therapy session to the audience at this point in the story. Ted Lasso was pitched with a three-season plan in mind, which means its only about halfway done. The show has to save some significant Ted material for later, which could be why Ted's meeting with Dr. Sharon isn’t shown.

Also, the biggest causes of Ted Lasso’s panic attacks have already been revealed in Ted Lasso season 2. He’s still far from over his recent divorce and separation from his son, and the pressure of leading such a major sports franchise in a foreign country is – despite all his claims of preparedness and positivity – very stressful. It doesn’t seem like Ted needs to come to terms with past trauma as much as he needs to find healthy habits to deal with his grief and anxiety in positive ways. And hopefully, that’s exactly what Dr. Sharon will help him do.

At the moment, there are a lot of other plotlines going on in Ted Lasso season 2 that also demand screen time. Nate’s ego is becoming a serious problem in the AFC Richmond locker room as he grapples with real validation for the first time in his life. Sam and Rebecca’s Bantr match could cause serious complications once their identities are discovered. And the team at large is going to face its biggest challenge yet in the end of the season. Hopefully, there’s room in there for some more Ted backstory reveals, but it may be a while before Ted Lasso really dives deep into the coach’s emotional state again.
