Throughout its six-season run, the British teen drama, Skins, introduced audiences to a lot of fresh faces. While some of its cast members couldn't sustain the same popularity that they had on the series, others have gone on to pursue highly successful careers in both TV and film.
Dev Patel, Daniel Kaluuya, and Nicholas Hoult all receive top-billing as lead actors, while Skins alumni, like Joe Dempsie and Hannah Murray, have gone on to enjoy future fame on Game of Thrones. In fact, in terms of popularity, these protagonists from Skins have managed to create quite a life for themselves.
10 Dev Patel
With no previous acting experience, Dev Patel made his screen debut with the role of Anwar on Skins. His character is carefree on the surface, but he also has his struggles with his identity, friends, and religion.
Landing a few movie roles after Skins, Patel came into the spotlight when he starred in the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire. His dramatic prowess was further put to display with Lion, which earned him a BAFTA award and an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Among the best movies starring Dev Patel, a more recent example is the fantasy epic, The Green Knight.
9 Hannah Murray
Hannah Murray played the sweet-talking Cassie on Skins, a girl with drug addiction and anorexia. She tries to fit in with the rest of the gang and, eventually, leaves them altogether to start a new life in Manhattan.
Murray is one of three Skins actors to attain mainstream recognition with Game of Thrones, starring as Gilly. By the final season, Gilly becomes Samwell Tarly's love interest and settles down with him. Murray has also starred in a slew of critically acclaimed films, such as God Help The Girl and Detroit. For the former, she took home a Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.
8 Nicholas Hoult
Known as the womanizing antihero in Skins, Tony Stonem, Nicholas Hoult transitioned towards supporting and lead roles in big-budget productions after the series' run.
Some of Nicholas Hoult's best movies include Warm Bodies, Mad Max: Fury Road and The Favourite. Hoult has also had a knack for the biopic genre, playing J.R.R Tolkein, J.D. Salinger, and Nikola Tesla in different films. Comic-book fans also recognize Hoult as the mutant Beast/Hank McCoy, a role he has reprised in four X-Men films. With such a diverse body of work, he has removed all possibilities of ever being typecast.
7 Daniel Kaluuya
The Ugandan-British actor, Daniel Kaluuya, had a recurring role as Posh Kenneth in the first two series of Skins. While his role isn't that significant, Kaluuya went on to build a highly impressive career.
Along with bit roles in Sicario and Johnny English Reborn, Kaluuya made his mark with a rousing performance in the Black Mirror episode, "Fifteen Million Merits." He became a household name with an Oscar-nominated lead role in Jordan Peele's directorial debut Get Out. There was no stopping for him after that as he gained praises for Widows, Queen & Slim, and Judas and The Black Messiah, in which he played Black Panther Party leader, Fred Hampton. Kaluuya swept the Supporting Actor categories at the Oscars, Golden Globes, and BAFTAs for the latter.
6 Craig Roberts
Before having a brief role in Skins, Craig Roberts was already popular with a lead role in the 2010 coming-of-age drama, Submarine. In the seventh series of Skins, Roberts appeared as Dominic, a researcher who falls for Effy.
Since then, Roberts has established himself as a character actor. He has popped up in comedies like 22 Jump Street, as well as dramas like The Fundamentals of Caring. When it comes to TV, Roberts starred as the lead in Amazon Prime's original comedy show, Red Oaks. Black comedy has been a constant genre in his filmography, so it isn't surprising that Roberts also made his directorial debut with the 2015 black comedy, Just Jim. Roberts also wrote the screenplay and starred alongside Emile Hirsch.
5 Joe Cole
Joe Cole appeared in the sixth season of Skins as Luke, a drug dealer. Just like Daniel Kaluuya, Cole also had a minor role in the series, followed by a lead part in a Black Mirror episode.
For the episode Hang The DJ, Cole even received a BAFTA TV Award nomination for Best Leading Actor. But apart from Black Mirror, Cole is perhaps most famous for playing one of the Shelby brothers in the period crime drama, Peaky Blinders. He played John Shelby till the character's death at the beginning of the fourth season. And his tryst with crime drama has continued, with a lead role in Gangs of London and in the prison biopic, A Prayer Before Dawn.
4 Jacob Anderson
Playing the minor character of Ryan in Skins, Jacob Anderson slowly built up his C.V. until he earned the role of Grey Work in Game of Thrones.
Roles in Broadchurch, Doctor Who, and the horror film Overlord followed soon after. But he is also one of those new-age actors whose music should be checked out. Under the alias "Raleigh Ritchie," he is involved in the pop and hip-hop music scene. With two studio albums and a slew of singles, Anderson explores themes in his music like maturity and social anxiety.
3 Kaya Scodelario
Having appeared in five seasons of Skins, Kaya Scodelario's character, Effy, is largely popular among fans of the show. Introduced as Tony's sister, Effy is a rebellious teenager.
After Skins ended, Scodelario starred in all of the three Maze Runner films as Teresa Agnes, a Glader, and the creator of the Maze. She also played Ted Bundy's wife, Carole Ann Boone, in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile. She's also set to appear as the Resident Evil character, Claire Redfield, in the upcoming film reboot, Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City.
2 Jack O'Connell
Starring as James, Jack O' Connell appeared as one of the protagonists of the third and fourth series. Even though he's depicted as a reckless womanizer, he mends his ways later on and reveals his emotional side.
O'Connell has been heavily successful in terms of his cinematic reach, having appeared in the independent films '71 and Starred Up. His other roles include the lead in Unbroken, Angelina Jolie's biopic about the Olympic athlete and war hero, Louis Zamperini. He was also a part of the ensemble of the Netflix Western miniseries, Godless.
1 Joe Dempsie
Joe Dempsie was a part of the main cast for the first two seasons, playing Chris. His character interestingly shared a lot of screen space with Hannah Murray's Cassie. Fast forward a few years later and both had joined Game of Thrones.
In the HBO fantasy series, Dempsie was popular as Gendry, an ally of Arya Stark's who discovers that he was an unacknowledged son of former king Robert Baratheon. Apart from other film and TV roles, he also gained repute among Final Fantasy fans, as he provided the voiceover for the characters Ardbert and Arenvald Lentinus in Final Fantasy XIV.
