Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings star Fala Chen has revealed that she made Simu Liu scream while training for the movie. The latest Phase 4 entry sees Liu step into the titular role under the direction of Destin Daniel Cretton as Marvel's first Asian American leading hero. It smashed box office records during its opening weekend, bringing in more than $90 million over Labor Day weekend.
Exploring a new corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings follows Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) as he finds himself drawn into the orbit of the Ten Rings terrorist organization. This brings him face-to-face with his father, The Mandarin (Tony Leung), a criminal mastermind who has lurked in the shadows and was previously portrayed (as a decoy) by Sir Ben Kingsley in Iron Man 3. In addition to Liu and Leung, the film’s cast also includes the aforementioned Fala Chen (who plays Shang-Chi’s mother in the film), as well as Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh, and Benedict Wong.
One thing that sets Shang-Chi apart from other Marvel movies is the intense focus on martial arts and stuntwork. As such, the cast undertook rigorous training to prepare for their roles. In a recent interview with Comicbook.com, Fala Chen addressed the training and revealed that she actually managed to make Simu Liu scream during a stretching session due to his lack of flexibility. Chen said:
We did a variety of trainings. Foremost, I did a lot of tai chi training, which is the inspiration for my movements. But at the same time, we did strength training, flexibility, Pilates, durability training, as well. But I have to say my favorite part was the massage at the end of the week because we were so sore at the end of the week. Oh, and also, I loved the stretching sessions where I usually volunteered to help Simu to stretch, because in the beginning, he was not very flexible. So I would be like, 'Simu, you need help?' And then me and ... we would just push his legs and try to push his back, and he would just scream. And yeah, I took enjoyment in that.
It's worth remembering that while Simu Liu may not have had the most flexibility when he began training for Shang-Chi, he has an incredible martial arts background that helped him land the role. In fact, he even reportedly executed a Black Widow-esque backflip during his audition for this film. Fala Chen may have helped him with his flexibility, but he had plenty of other athletic prowess to help him step into the role. That said, Fala Chen clearly seemed to enjoy her ability to get a scream out of her on-screen son.
With all of that said, the talk of intense physical training should excite Marvel fans looking for some fantastic fight sequences. Knowing that Simu Liu and his co-stars underwent immense physical preparation for their roles, it's not surprising that Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings has some of the most impressive Marvel stuntwork audiences have seen in quite some time. Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings is currently in theaters.
