Rick & Morty Collides With Stand By Me In Claymation Promo

Adult Swim releases a new claymation promo for Rick and Morty seeing the hit animated series colliding with Rob Reiner's Stand by Me. The 1986 coming-of-age dramedy centered on a group of friends, played by Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman and Jerry O'Connell, in 1959 as they venture on a hike to find the dead body of a missing boy while also being forced to confront the local bully, portrayed by Kiefer Sutherland. Based on Stephen King's novella The BodyStand By Me has been celebrated as one of the best adaptations of the author's work, earning an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay and two Golden Globe nominations for Best Drama Motion Picture and Best Director for Reiner.

Rick and Morty hails from creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon and is based on an animated parody short of Back to the Future from the former. The series stars Roiland as the titular mad scientist and his grandson as they venture on dangerous trips through the multiverse, much to the chagrin of Rick's daughter and Morty's mother Beth, voiced by Sarah Chalke, and Rick's son-in-law Jerry, voiced by Chris Parnell, and the indifference of Morty's older sister Summer, voiced by Spencer Grammer. Rick and Morty has received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike since its premiere in 2013, earning two Primetime Emmy Awards, for its innovative humor and character development and for its deconstruction and satire of many iconic films and TV shows.

On the heels of the season 5 finale, a new claymation promo video for Rick and Morty (via Swimpedia) has debuted. The video sees a recreation of the leech pond scene from Stand by Me with the group being multiple variants of Morty as they fret over the creatures stuck to their bodies. Check out the clip below:

The latest season of Rick and Morty has seen Adult Swim dive deep into the claymation well to crossover the series with everything from Godzilla vs. Kong to Hobo with a Shotgun. The new clip, however, comes as one of the more unique of the bunch in that it marks the first time the characters have crossed over into a world the series has already explored with Stand by Me. Season 3's "The Ricklantis Mixup" saw a group of students at Morty Academy on The Citadel of Ricks venture to the mythical Wishing Portal ahead of their graduation and assignment to a new Rick, ultimately discovering what appears to be real but only finding a trash disposal.

The Rick and Morty season 3 episode touched upon a number of the same beats as Stand by Me, including the group walking along a train track, fleeing an armed junkyard owner and his animal and learning about themselves along the way. Ironically enough, the leech scene is one of the most iconic from the film that wasn't recreated for the episode, making it a nice throwback for fans of both the film and the series to see it come to life with the group of misfit Mortys, even if in a claymation format. Only time will tell what claymation crossover Adult Swim has planned next for Rick and Morty in the time leading up to season 6.
