Microsoft Flight Simulator's Top Gun Expansion Delayed To Match the Film

The team behind Microsoft Flight Simulator has delayed the flight of the Top Gun: Maverick expansion to coincide with the movie's 2022 release. Flight Simulator has enjoyed considerable success since its release on Steam and Windows 10 PC in August last year: enough to fly the game to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Game Pass in late July of 2021. That success has also resulted in DLC content bringing new add-ons, planes, airports and so on, from Asobo Studios and dedicated modders alike. One modder has even added Mario Kart tracks to Microsoft Flight Simulator.

Asobo Studio's airplane simulator maintains a huge following thanks to the presence of over 2 million mapped out cities, 37,000 airports, and sheer depth of detail to natural and man-made topography. The chance to explore famous landmarks throughout the world and fly real planes that respond to life-like physics has led to over 2 million copies of the game sold by the end of 2020. Coming off of that success, Flight Simulator has periodically released free and paid updates to the game's world and aesthetics. One such update to Microsoft Flight Simulator is a Top Gun DLC, bringing the main character's signature F/A-18 Super Hornet to the game.

Following Paramount Pictures' delay of Top Gun: Maverick to May 27 next year, the Flight Simulator team has since come out with an update on the Maverick Expansion. The team has reiterated that the Expansion's release will coincide with the release of the movie, implying its delay. Other than promising more information to come in the future, that is the extent of the post. Asobo Studios announced the movie-based expansion at E3 during the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase.

Microsoft Flight Simulator has a busy schedule ahead of it in terms of new content. In addition to the delayed Maverick Expansion, Asobo Studios also plans to bring helicopters into Microsoft Flight Simulator at some point next year. Fans have anticipated the the addition of helicopters for awhile now, with several already releasing mods to make it possible. Before the end of 2021, simmers will also receive a new mode of play: dedicated multiplayer races. Named for the game's partnership with the Reno Air Racing Association, this game mode will allow simmers to compete in the STIHL National Championship Air Races.

While surely disappointing for fans of Microsoft Flight Simulator and the Top Gun series, it's expected given the delay of the movie and Microsoft's stated intent to release the DLC simultaneously. That initial plan has not changed, and it makes sense from a marketing standpoint why they would want to release the expansion in association with the new film. Thankfully, simmers will not have to wait long for a new mode of gameplay to take off. Microsoft Flight Simulator will add competitive air races sometime in fall 2021.
