James Gunn Reveals Huge Stack of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Storyboards

James Gunn unveils a large stack of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 storyboards as production nears. Perhaps one of the more eagerly anticipated movies on the MCU's upcoming release calendar, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is currently scheduled to debut in May 2023. The movie has been the subject of some behind the scenes intrigue, as Gunn was fired as director in 2018. He has since been reinstated and even confirmed last year that the script had already been written. Despite that, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 won't begin filming until later in 2021.

Little is known about the plot for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but all signs point to it being the closing chapter for many of the characters. Gunn has said he doesn't believe he'll direct more Guardians movies after this, and Dave Bautista also thinks this'll be his last performance as Drax. The script has been described as very emotional, and it is even expected to feature the death of a beloved character. The entire Guardians of the Galaxy cast will return, including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, and Bautista.

Just a few days ago, Gunn revealed he's begun storyboarding for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and now he's shared a peek at the process. On social media, Gunn posted a picture of a large stack of storyboards and explained they represent "12 pages of script & will be the foundation for this section of the film." He confirmed they're just from the past several days, and that they're all hand-drawn. "Designing the film like this is the most important part of my job at this point," Gunn added. That pile of storyboards has to be thicker than the script several times over, so the fact that it only represents 12 pages shows just how much detail Gunn puts into his pre-production work. Storyboarding is likely even more of an intensive process for a sci-fi movie like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, since Gunn has to envision numerous action sequences and a general idea of what he wants the set to look like. He has quite a ways to go when it comes to storyboarding the rest of this film, though he's already put in a lot of work.

As Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has been in the works for some time now, Gunn has already worked out a great deal of the movie. Beyond the script and the ongoing storyboarding process, the director confirmed earlier this year that the soundtrack for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is already complete, which isn't too surprising since Gunn takes the music choices for his movies very seriously. Now he's moving onto the next stage of pre-production, which only brings him closer to filming. In other words, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is finally coming together.
