A popular leaker suggests God of War: Ragnarok will appear at the upcoming PS5 Showcase. Rumors of the God of War sequel's first appearance in a year has been circulating for quite a while, but insiders are doubling down now that the PlayStation Showcase 2021 has been announced. Of course, this is by no means a guarantee that God of War: Ragnarok will reveal any thing substantial, but its presence wouldn't be out of the ordinary.
It was confirmed Thursday that a PS5 event will be held on September 9 after weeks of speculation. Sony shared little about what will be shown during the stream but confirmed it'll be 40 minutes long and will not reveal anything about the PSVR 2 headset. It's probable that the event will primarily focus on PS5 games coming this winter, possibly including a new look at Horizon Forbidden West and the PS5 port Grand Theft Auto V. According to a fresh rumor, God of War: Ragnarok can be expected to make a showing, as well.
According to reputable leaker Nick Baker, Sony will debut the first look at God of War: Ragnarok at the PlayStation Showcase 2021. It's unclear if this will be in the form of gameplay or just a cinematic trailer, but Baker's source seems very confident. Baker previously leaked Ghost of Tsushima Iki Island expansion prior to its reveal earlier this summer, so he has a proven track record when it comes to first-party PlayStation titles.
It's worth noting Ragnarok is not the official subtitle for the game, which has yet to be officially revealed. The speculated subtitle is based on the text "Ragnarok is coming" from the end of the 2020 reveal, but the game could easily be officially revealed as God of War 2.
If God of War: Ragnarok does appear at the PS5 showcase, it seems likely Sony will announce the game's official title of the game and - with any luck - a release date or window. The title was originally slated to release in 2021, but it was delayed to allow developer Sony Santa Monica more time to finish production. This means Sony doesn't have any first-party exclusives slated for this holiday season, a fate solidified by Horizon Forbidden West's delay to February 2022.
Still, if God of War: Ragnarok gameplay is shown, it may be enough to tide PlayStation owners over for a little while longer. As Horizon Forbidden West is releasing early in the year, Sony will probably aim to space its two major exclusives out. It's possible God of War: Ragnarok will release as early as summer to match Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us Part II's dynamic in 2020, or it could be held off until the 2021 holiday season. If this leak checks out on September 9, perhaps that and more will be made clear very soon.
