Doctor Strange: 10 Unpopular Opinions About The Comic Books, According To Reddit

Doctor Strange, the Sorcerer Supreme, and Master of the Mystic Arts is a mainstay of Marvel Comics and holds the key to opening up a world full of magic and chaos. Despite his importance to the Universe and The Avengers, some fans hold some questionable opinions on the character (particularly on Reddit).

Whether it's surrounding some of his most famous comic book runs, how he has been portrayed on the page, Benedict Cumberbatch's portrayal on the big screen, or even concerning his supporting characters, these Reddit fans definitely have some hot takes on the Ancient One's former apprentice. Some of them will certainly contribute to the ongoing discourse surrounding Doctor Strange.

10 Jason Aaron's Run Ruins The Character

Although one Reddit thread begins with the fun topic of building the Sanctum Sanctorum out of LEGO, it turns to the best comic runs of the character. For Reddit u/Uncanny_Hero, they urge fans not to check out Jason Aaron's run on Strange noting that "while it's kinda fun, I personally think it ruins Strange as a character."

His run is hugely celebrated by Marvel's audiences, which makes this take a controversial one. The writer took control of the character between 2015 and 2017, redefining the modern iteration of Strange and arguably making him relevant again through three major arcs that saw Doctor Strange face off against several formidable foes.

9 A Sudden Relationship With Captain Marvel

In the recent Captain Marvel run, the Sorcerer Supreme has a one-night fling with the Kree warrior, something she immediately regrets. Fans were extremely hesitant about the decision as the characters don't really feel right for one another. At the time, one Reddit user was actually on board with the couple though.

While the overwhelming feeling was that it would end in disaster, Reddit u/delightfuldinosaur proclaimed that "I'm interested to see where this relationship goes," clearly not seeing the issues and problems that may arise with the two characters. As was expected, it does result in a new feud with Carol actually taking the magic away from Stephen Strange.

8 Strange Academy Not Living Up To Expectations

By all accounts, Strange Academy is slowly becoming a beloved title. It's a real change of pace from the rest of the Marvel Universe and a fun way to introduce a range of new magical characters. Reddit user MrZarq suggested that "While I like it, I expected more of it. Or maybe I just expected something different. I expected it to focus on the school, like some sort of Marvel Harry Potter, but the first arc was immediately focussed on an external enemy."

Although it's a fair criticism to make, the series has evolved greatly since that time and put a real focus on the internal conflicts of the students. It's a title that grows with each passing issue and certainly doesn't underdeliver.

7 The Big Screen Adaptation

The MCU's iteration of Doctor Strange has definitely been a success, bringing the character to new audiences worldwide. Fans have been pretty happy with the faithful adaptation of Strange, who continues to grow on-screen. Reddit u/carpenterdon's take seems to ignore the consensus.

While its natural to make comparisons on which Doctor Strange is better, the writer suggests that the movie was rushed, hitting major beats but actually holding back as well; "So they had to introduce Magic to the general audience in a way that slowly told the story yet kept enough action to hang on to the 'action film' fan." It's a balance the movie had to make but it told Strange's story in a nuanced way and is still one of the MCU's most creative projects that paid homage to the comics rather than ignoring them as they suggest.

6 Nightmare's Status

If there's one thing that most Marvel fans can agree on it's that they love the Doctor Strange villain Nightmare. Indeed, it's easy to find plenty of threads praising the monster and looking forward to his MCU arrival. It's why Reddit u/Draculasaurus_Rex's opinion might be unpopular.

Despite the universal love, the same thought pops up again and again that the character is "highly underrated." Considering his continued use in the comics, the legion of readers heaping praise on the diabolical antagonist, and his potential on-screen sequel debut where he could change the MCU, it's probably safe to say that he isn't underrated at all and widely appreciated by audiences and Marvel alike.

5 Wong's Move From Comics To Film

Wong's origins in the comics certainly wouldn't translate to the screen, with his role having shifted in recent years. While it was clear the MCU could not place Wong in the position of assistant once more, back before the movie was released, some fans had unpopular opinions about what to do with the character.

While most in this Reddit thread universally agreed that changes were needed, one user argued that "Wong has a unique story I feel they can modernize without abandoning everything interesting about him. I'd still like for him to be a descendant of a long line of sorcerer supreme assistants." It's an unpopular concept, with the films making the correct choice in regards to his adaptation, moving away from the stereotyped position he was put in, in the source material.

4 Missing Classic Doctor Strange

The classic run of Doctor Strange truly featured some standout stories, but as with every character in the Marvel Universe, Stephen had to change to adapt to modern audiences. One Reddit u/ Dr_Strange_MD believes that this should never have happened, stating that "I'm reading through the newer stuff now, and I've got to say that I really miss the way he was written back in the '70s and '80s."

They go on to compare him to Tony Stark in his current adaptation, but there are so many intriguing new narratives to explore in the current era that it's hard to argue in favor of returning to the past. Classic Strange is nostalgic in many ways, but the conflicts of the recent runs are perhaps far more compelling.

3 Constantine Vs. Doctor Strange

Constantine and Doctor Strange will always be compared to one another. When pitching the two sorcerers against each other in battle most DC and Marvel fans would agree that Strange would come out on top. One Reddit user offers a very different idea though.

They say that "Constantine can't be killed or banished or erased from existence and can't be beaten unless you're a nigh-omnipotent," suggesting that he would actually best the Doctor in battle. It's definitely an unpopular opinion for Marvel fans but Strange's resiliency and tactical processes would still find a way to trap or neutralize the DC anti-hero.

2 Into Shamballa's Character Development

Into Shamballa is absolutely a defining point of Doctor Strange in the comics and a story that fans will often return to or recommend. Dan Green's and J. M. DeMatteis' work is truly astounding, but Reddit u/puyakashah clearly disagrees with its praise.

They say that "Into Shamballa isn't heavy on story or character development, but the artwork is amazing." While the compliment is justified, the criticism is likely quite unpopular, as Strange's rediscovery of his heritage is often heralded as a vital part of the character's journey and therefore crucial to his development.

1 Steve Ditko's Best Ever Run

So many writers and artists have contributed their talents to the continued re-invention of Doctor Strange. It's important to pay homage to what really began it all while also looking to the modern era. Stan Lee himself was always keen to move forward with Marvel constantly increasing in quality.

One Reddit u/peterhohman rather nobly suggests that "The original Steve Ditko run is easily the best material with Dr. Strange to this day, in my opinion." It's hard to argue against the quality of this, but once more nostalgia can be a powerful thing. Some of the modern interpretations of the character cannot be overlooked, especially the runs which have come to define the current iteration of the Sorcerer Supreme.
