A Guardians of The Galaxy Hero Likely Has Secret Magic Powers

Potential spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy #18 below!

Marvel Comics just revealed that Gamora might have gotten secret mystical powers, as the longtime member of the Guardians of the Galaxy's exposure to powerful artifacts likely unlocked incredible mystical potential for the hero. As the superteam prepares to take down the villainous Dormammu, who has taken over Ego the Living Planet, Doctor Doom tells the Guardians that Gamora's close encounters with the Infinity Stones and the Black Vortex means she might have secret special abilities.

Gamora is one of the strongest warriors in the Marvel Universe. Her training at the hands of her adopted father Thanos made her one of the deadliest assassins in the cosmos. However, Gamora wasn't born with any superpowers. Instead, she had her offensive abilities enhanced by the Mad Titan. After serving as Thanos' personal assassin, Gamora joined the Guardians of the Galaxy, where she used her skills to take on threats across the universe, even using her training to kill the man who raised her. Now, it's been revealed Gamora has serious mystical potential thanks to prolonged exposure to powerful artifacts.

In Guardians of the Galaxy #18 by Al Ewing, Juan Frigeri, Federico Blee, and Cory Petit, Doctor Doom prepares a spell in order to siphon the powers of Dormammu and help the Guardians defeat him. Doom promises he will end the Chitauri/Doombot War and the Dormammu invasion by dealing a critical blow to the Dark Lord. When Doctor Doom starts the spell and shows each member card that represents each hero, he reveals he's The Ascendant - the interface between magic and man. Star-Lord asks Doom if that role was originally intended for Gamora, to which the villain responds "of course," as she's "touched both the Infinity Stones and the Black Vortex," and has "vast mystical potential."

Gamora previously gained temporary cosmic powers after encountering the Black Vortex and had used the Infinity Stones during her time as Requiem. It appears interacting with both cosmic artifacts has given Gamora a real link to mystical abilities. Like Doctor Doom, she has a connection between magic and herself.

Considering Star-Lord has already received a God-like power up in Ewing's run of Guardians of the Galaxy, the comments by Doctor Doom referencing Gamora's "vast mystical potential" is certainly more than a throwaway line. It's likely that her link to magic will be explored further in future Guardians' series, as her connection to the Black Vortex and Infinity Stones might have given her secret powers. If Gamora ultimately has those additional powers, there's little question she'll become one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe. Guardians of the Galaxy #18 is in comic book stores now.
