7 Creators Influenced By The Snyderverse | ScreenRant

Zack Snyder has made no secret of his many inspirations in crafting his multi-chapter DC epic. Across three films, the cinematic and comic influences abound but less discussed are those creators who took inspiration from those three films. Despite their divisive reception, these movies have indeed had their own influence, whether on comics, TV shows, and other films.

Creators have taken inspiration from the movies' costume designs, aesthetics, VFX concepts, fight choreography, and even the scenes themselves with little nods here and there. Some influences may still be unknown, either unspoken or subconsciously adopted in some subtle way. Regardless, there are many creators out there who feel these movies deserve their dues, paying them some degree of respect in their own works.

7 Lee Toland Krieger - Superman & Lois

The CW's 2021 show Superman & Lois introduced home audiences to the new concept of a married Lois and Clark raising two teenage boys on the Kent Farm. However, the concept is not without its sources of inspiration. Among them, the director of the show's pilot, Lee Toland Krieger, explained how the series takes inspiration from 2013's Man of Steel.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the director admitted to being an admirer of Zack Snyder's film, and Superman & Lois took inspiration from its "intimate moments" which he considers "really beautiful." He further noted that inspiration was also taken from the costume design, and also paid special attention to how the often computer-generated cape lent itself to "heroic moments" that can also be seen in the dramatic cape action throughout the series.

6 Injustice 2 - Superman vs Zod

An iconic shot from Man of Steel, also seen in the film's third trailer, is Superman punching General Zod across the Metropolis skyline in the movie's final confrontation. This exact shot -- same superhero, same angle, same choreography -- was used in 2017's Elseworld fighting game Injustice 2 as Superman's hard-hitting "super move". It is no wonder the game's creative director Ed Boon expressed his enthusiasm for the Snyder Cut.

But the use of the shot does not stop there. It can be found out and about, from the extremely controversial yet highly-viewed Superman vs Goku 2 Death Battle to the fourth chapter of Mike Habjan's insanely popular Superman vs Hulk video series. While a small shot in a movie filled with spectacular action, its distinctive and easily recognizable look has clearly made it the cinematic equivalent of an iconic comic book panel.

5 Heat Vision VFX

In Man of Steel, a unique feature of Zack Snyder's modern and realistic depiction of Superman's powerset emphasises the "violent" nature of his heat vision -- a beam of flame shooting from his glowing red eyes. Interestingly, this effect illuminates the inside of his skull, highlighting veins and bone structure through the translucent skin around his eye sockets.

Since then, this particular effect has become a staple of the superpower in live-action. Amazon's superhero satire The Boys depicts an identical effect when the show's not-so-moral Superman representation "Homelander" uses his own heat vision. The CW adopted the effect, especially in this year's Superman & Lois. Even Marvel's upcoming Eternals film showcases one god-like superhero whose skin lights up around his glowing eyes upon firing lasers from his retinas.

4 Tony Daniel - Wonder Woman Costume

In 2016, DC held its "Rebirth" event, a sort of semi-reboot re-establishing older DC elements from prior to the New 52 reboot of 2011, plus some new revamps. Among these revamps, comic artist Tony Daniel had redesigned Wonder Woman's costume, and it does not take much to notice the influence from costume designer Michael Wilkinson's cinematic rendition of the Amazon princess' ancient armor.

Come the costume's main debut in Wonder Woman: Rebirth (2016), the gold stars were removed from the outfit and the lines of the corset were pulled further apart, leaving this depiction with almost no differences from her Batman v Superman debut. This may not even be the first time Wilkinson's design has been adapted to main canon comics, as artist Jason Fabok, who drew the Batman v Superman WonderCon cover, also debuted an exceedingly similar design in Justice League #36 (2015).

3 Joëlle Jones - Knightmare Batman

Tom King's Batman #33 (2017) started the caped crusader on his "Rules of Engagement" story set primarily in the fictional Middle-Eastern country of Khadym, trekking the desert landscape with a shotgun and Catwoman at his side. Besides the firearm, the stand-out features of this Batman's appearance are the long trench coat over his traditional suit, the goggles on his forehead, and his sandy pants.

The comic's artist, Joëlle Jones, revealed during a SYFY Wire event that Batman's appearance was indeed inspired by his practical desert outfit seen in Batman's dystopian "Knightmare" vision from Batman v Superman, in which the Dark Knight leads a brave resistance in battle against the obedient legions of an Anti-Life brainwashed Superman amid the desert ruins of a future Earth.

2 Red Notice - Museum Gala

The upcoming Netflix action thriller Red Notice is notable for its DC all-star cast, consisting of Ryan Reynolds (Green Lantern), Dwayne Johnson (the upcoming Black Adam solo film), and Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman in the DCEU). One might be forgiven for assuming this was no coincidence. But what ties this movie to the Snyderverse is one scene from the tail end of the movie's trailer.

At a lavish event where men in tuxedoes and women in glimmering dresses socialize, Dwayne Johnson's do-gooder character confronts Gal Gadot's thieving villainess in a moment bristling with flirtatious tension. He whispers intimidations into her ear from behind before she turns to him with a smirk and retort. This is identical to a sequence in Batman v Superman where Ben Affleck's Bruce Wayne confronts Gal Gadot's Diana Prince at a museum gala. Same actress, same staging, same environment. Different men, but same attire.

1 Ruth Carter - Superman Costume

Judianna Makovsky was the head costume designer for Captain America: Civil War (2016) who brought Black Panther's iconic suit to life. After that, the responsibility fell to Ruth Carter to put a new spin on the Wakandan king's costume for his 2018 solo film Black Panther. To accomplish this task, she turned to Michael Wilkinson's work on Man of Steel for inspiration.

In an interview with Inverse, Carter described how Superman's costume in the 2013 film -- with the chrome highlights underneath the fabric highlighting the muscles -- was exactly the look she wanted to represent the Vibranium-laced material of Black Panther's uniform. With the help of artist Adi Granov, the result is a similarly accurate cinematic representation of comic book superhero anatomy. She was so determined to pursue this iconic look that she fought against concerns raised that it could get damaged performing stunts.
