What Tom Hardy In Morbius Means For Sony's Spiderverse Future

Tom Hardy potentially having a cameo in Morbius as Venom could have big implications for Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters. Rumors about Hardy making a special appearance in the third installment in the Spider-Man spinoff franchise were fueled by recent comments from the movie’s director, Daniel Espinosa. In an interview, Espinosa accidentally mentioned Hardy when talking about the actors he worked with on Morbius.

There’s been no solid confirmation from Hardy, Espinosa, or Sony Pictures but if he were to appear, it may not be Morbius’ only connection to a character from outside the movie. The first Morbius trailer revealed a cameo from Michael Keaton, who played Vulture - AKA Adrian Toomes - in Spider-Man: Homecoming. It hasn’t been outright stated that Keaton is reprising his role as the MCU villain, but that was the impression many took away from the trailer, despite the apparent separation between the MCU and Sony’s Spider-Man world. From the looks of things, it is at least possible Morbius (Jared Leto) could run into both Vulture and Venom on the big screen.

At this point, a Venom cameo from Tom Hardy is looking like a likely scenario, and more so than the situation with Michael Keaton's Vulture, it makes a lot of sense for the movie. Right now, Sony has three developing franchises, which are Venom, Morbius, and Kraven the Hunter. Since the studio wanted all of these comic characters to co-exist in a shared cinematic universe, it is only sensible they would make use of that aspect of their franchise, as opposed to ignoring it. That’s why Venom characters crossing over into Morbius (or vice versa) should actually be expected, and just like the MCU did during Phase One, this cameos hint at a bigger world.

Also, Morbius specifically picking Venom for a cameo would speak to the character’s importance to Sony’s own Spiderverse. Venom showing up would reinforce the notion Eddie Brock is the cornerstone of its universe. At least right now, it doesn’t have a Spider-Man, so it could be Sony has decided to make Venom (one of the most iconic Spidey adversaries) a foundational figure for them to build around.

Venom could be central to whatever comes next for Sony’s world. As for what that could be, there are a few possibilities. The leading theory is that Sony could be working toward adapting its own take on the Sinister Six, possibly as anti-heroes rather than villains. It may be Vulture will attempt to recruit both Venom and Morbius for a team, but why he would do that is unclear. Another scenario is that Sony is setting up a smaller-scale team-up in Venom 3 or Morbius 2. Depending on how far they go with it, they could end up incorporating Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Kraven the Hunter in whatever their plans are too. Even if the Venom cameo in Morbius isn’t meant to set up one or the other, it would still bind the Spiderverse together and pave the road for a fun crossover.
