A fan-made stop-motion video sees Tom Holland’s Spider-Man recreate Tobey Maguire’s infamous dance from Spider-Man 3. The upcoming third entry in the MCU’s Spider-Man franchise, Spider-Man: No Way Home, follows Peter (Holland) as he deals with the fallout of having his secret identity revealed in Far From Home. After seeking help from Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), a spell aimed at making the world forget that Peter is Spider-Man seemingly opens the Multiverse. The most recent trailer for No Way Home teased the return of villains from past Sony Spider-Man films, including Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock, Jamie Foxx’s Electro, and William Dafoe’s Green Goblin.
In an addition to being the most highly anticipated film since Avengers: Endgame, No Way Home has reinvigorated interest in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy and Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man films. Rumors have circulated for months that Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s versions of the hero will appear in the Phase 4 film to help Holland defeat their respective villains. At this point, the enthusiasm and nostalgia felt by the fandom are palpable. Raimi’s trilogy in particular set a precedent responsible for influencing the current state of superhero cinema. Even if Spider-Man 3 fell a little short of the mark set by its predecessor, which is clear in the most iconic scene in the film.
Spider-Man 3’s most infamous and ridiculed sequence sees Peter poorly adopt a suave, villainous persona. Imbued with a new sense of self-confidence, he struts down the streets of New York City and dances. Artist Lawrence Becker recently shared a stop-motion video on Instagram in which Holland’s Spider-Man pays tribute to Maguire, adopting what has become known as the "emo dance." Peter's transformation in Spider-Man 3 occurs when he comes into contact with the alien symbiote, Venom. This prompts him to embrace his darker side, adopting slick emo-style bangs, finger-guns, and awkward dance moves. It is still unclear whether the infamous scene is intentionally comedic or simply cringe-worthy. However, some have argued that’s the whole point: Peter, who is first and foremost a nerd, has a stereotypical perception of what it means to be “cool.” The dorky nature of Maguire’s portrayal is one of the reasons some argue he is the best Peter Parker.
Spider-Man 3 was a commercial success but was ultimately seen to be overstuffed with too many villains and plot lines. While the film’s Sandman, the Sinister Six, and a slew of other characters may appear in No Way Home, the MCU has since perfected the art of balancing multiple characters, plots, and villains. Hopefully, the upcoming film does bring back Maguire since, as was the case with Garfield’s webslinger, audiences never got a proper goodbye. Originally, Raimi planned on making a fourth film that never came to fruition. Now, things have come full circle, with Raimi directing Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Maguire (potentially) featuring in No Way Home. Whether either of those films produces a scene iconic enough to rival the "emo dance" remains to be seen.
