The Umbrella Academy Season 3 Is Almost Done Filming

Star of The Umbrella Academy, Elliot Page, teased that filming for the third season of the superhero show is almost complete. The Oscar-nominated actor, who came out as transgender in December 2020, has been with the show since its debut. The Season 2 finale generated possibly devastating consequences for Page’s character and the rest of the Hargreeves family.

The first season of The Umbrella Academy premiered on Netflix on February 15, 2019, with more than 45 million households tuning in to watch the series during its first month. The series was renewed for a second season immediately after and released on July 31, 2020. After the positive acclaim received from both critics and viewers, Netflix renewed the show for a third season. The Umbrella Academy follows the story of the Hargreeves family, a group of children with supernatural abilities, as they try to prevent a global apocalypse. The production stars Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castaneda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Misfits star Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, and Justin H. Min in the lead roles. The much-anticipated Season 3 does not have a release date yet, though Page teases that one may be announced soon.

On his Instagram story, Elliot Page posted a photo of Sam Hachey and Kyle, the assistant directors on the set of The Umbrella Academy, looking into the camera with their COVID-safe masks on. Kyle was seen wearing a shirt with ‘Protect Trans Kids’ written over the transgender flag, possibly supporting Page’s transgender journey. Alongside expressing his love and gratitude for the assistant directors, Elliot also captioned the image announcing that Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy has almost wrapped. There has been much discussion over whether Page, who identifies as transgender and uses he/they pronouns, will continue portraying Vanya Hargreeves. It seems as though Page is happy to continue playing the role. Many actors are, after all, familiar with performing characters with vastly different gender identities and sexual orientations to their own, with a multitude of individuals who identify as heterosexual playing gay characters – for example, Timothee Chalamet and Armie Hammer in Call Me By Your Name. Therefore, it is not uncommon for transgender actors to begin or continue portraying cisgender characters.

Without this sort of representation, the industry would not be diverse enough or would be seen to be celebrating heteronormativity rather than supporting and amplifying LGBTQ+ voices. With the addition of The Sparrows in the third season of The Umbrella Academy, viewers can only hope for additional equal representation to come. Or, at the very least, a spectacular showdown between the Sparrows and the central team of heroes.
