The Mandalorian Season 2 BTS Video Shows Mark Hamill On-Set

A new behind-the-scenes video for an upcoming episode of Disney Gallery reveals an unedited Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker in the Mandalorian season 2 finale on Disney+. The second season of the hugely popular show revealed the surprise appearance of Hamill as Luke Skywalker, who rescued Din Djarin and his crew before taking Grogu back with him to be trained as a Jedi. After two seasons of trying to find a home for Grogu, the show seemingly found the best possible mentor for the beloved character, seeing as Luke Skywalker is at the peak of his powers at that moment in Star Wars continuity.

Directed by Ant-Man and The Wasp's Peyton Reed and written by showrunner Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian season 2 finale found not only the return of Luke Skywalker, but also a new challenge set up for Din Djarin as his use of Moff Gideon's darksaber makes him the rightful ruler of Mandalore, a title he doesn't want. However, Bo-Katan does want to rule Mandalore and now her only way to get there is to defeat Din in combat and take the darksaber back. Whether or not Luke Skywalker will appear in season 3 or beyond is unclear, however.

In a new trailer for Disney Gallery posted by Star Wars, Mark Hamill is seen on-set for The Mandalorian season 2 finale "The Rescue" wearing his original Jedi Knight outfit from Return of the Jedi. When the episode debuted it was unclear of Hamill was actually on-set or if he had just supplied the voice for a stand in. However, set pics later emerged showing that Hamill was physically there and now there's video of the production to further solidify his involvement and showing the actor without the de-aging CGI once again playing the famed character. Take a look at the trailer below:

The last time Mark Hamill returned to the Star Wars universe was with The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, which showed the older Jedi in seclusion on Temple Island on the planet Ahch-To. It was there that Rey found Luke, who reluctantly agreed to help train her before using his Force projection powers to assist in the escape of the resistance at the end of The Last Jedi. This use of his power ultimately led to his demise and his overall portrayal and death was a source of contention for many fans. Hamill also came back for sequel trilogy finale The Rise of Skywalker, playing Luke's Force ghost for a scene.

For fans that grew up watching Return of the Jedi, seeing Hamill in costume as Luke Skywalker on set is sure to bring back nostalgic feelings. Seeing Luke back in action and at the height of his powers in The Mandalorian was a special treat, especially for those who disliked his portrayal in the new Star Wars trilogy. While there's been no confirmation that Hamill would return again in future seasons of the show, the excitement over his appearance is something Lucasfilm is surely paying attention to, especially for a legacy character like Luke. With an Obi-Wan Kenobi mini series just finishing filming, there's no reason Luke couldn't be revisited in some form or another in the future, be it with or without Hamill's involvement.
