The Last Letter From Your Lover: Every Flashback, Ranked

Based on the eponymous novel by Jojo Moyes, The Last Letter From Your Lover was a charming romance that followed two love stories — the first in 1965 and the latter in present day London. In the present, Ellie, played by Felicity Jones, finds beautifully written letters that allude to a long-forgotten forbidden romance while researching a piece for work, and thus begins a series of flashbacks which take audiences back to a time when communication was epistolary and a missed train could change your life.

Between sun soaked afternoons in the French Riviera and gloomy London days when Shailene Woodley's Jennifer would sneak around to meet her lover Anthony (Callum Turner), audiences got invested in the flashbacks that delicately depicted the sixties — and some of these time jumps were better than the others.

9 Jennifer Returns From The Hospital

Rain-drenched and overcast, the first rewind to London in 1965 was full of confusion for Jennifer, and viewers too. The scene showed a scarred J with her husband Larry in a car ride to her luxurious home. She remembered nothing about her life, and the man sitting next to her was a stranger. Jennifer had just recovered from a car accident that had robbed her of her memories, and everything was foreign to her.

While Yvonne tried to uplift J's bad mood by describing her perfect life to her, this flashback was awkward and unhappy because she couldn't even remember what she used to call her husband, let alone her house maid.

8 Jennifer Discovers The Truth About Anthony

This recollection was again from the time that Jennifer's memories remained lost to her, but she was more determined to find out the truth about the circumstances of her accident and her life that Lawrence was clearly hiding something about. Audiences saw J go to the post office and take control of her situation by reinstating her post box, which she discovered had been closed by Larry after the accident.

On a blazing trail for the truth, she even looks through Lawrence's study, and finally finds the last letter from Anthony — putting the final puzzle pieces together in her head. This scene would have been a lot higher on the list, but after J confronted him about hiding the letters, Lawrence lied to her and made her believe that Anthony died in the car crash next to her, leaving the mystery deep as ever.

7 Jennifer Finds The First Letter

During the time that Jennifer struggled to make sense of her life in the absence of her memory, the time jumps were dull and upsetting. Viewers really wanted J to find something to satisfy their curiosity, and in this instance there was a glimmer of hope. While looking through her library she picked up Scoop by Evelyn Waugh, inside which J had hidden a letter from her Boot.

The excitement that the letter incited in J was infectious, and she ended up going through all of her things until she found a shoebox full of old letters from her lover. This scene set the tone for the rest of the movie and roused everybody's interest about what was coming next.

6 Boot And Jennifer's Rendezvous'

After being compelled to spend one-on-one time together due to Lawrence's absence, ironically, Anthony and Jennifer developed a close friendship, which was depicted in a gorgeous montage sequence of all the time they spent together in the French Riviera. Hazy summer days by the beach turned into excursions to quaint book stalls, or a vineyard bicycle ride replete with the sound of pealing laughter, till the sun departed and it poured from the skies.

The soft-edged nostalgia and beautiful cinematography made this flashback a truly enjoyable one for watchers, and fashion lovers can see the best outfits in The Last Letter From Your Lover here. Jennifer and Anthony's chemistry was palpable, especially when they played the picnic game inside J's car while it rained outside.

5 Jennifer Regains Her Memory

After the accident, Larry had made J believe that Anthony was dead. She lived with that guilt for nearly four years, and audiences waited with bated breaths for the flashback where she would find out that the love of her life was, in fact, very alive and still besotted with her. The serendipity of their next meeting was delicious: they ran into each other during Christmas season on the street, and all of J's buried memories came rushing back.

This scene was a particularly good one because it reaffirmed that the two were indeed star-crossed lovers who would come together by any means possible. The return of all her experiences with Boot the moment she locked eyes with him was incredibly sweet and satisfying for viewers to watch.

4 Jennifer And Boot Realize They Have Feelings For Each Other

After all the adventures that Anthony and Jennifer had had together, it was only obvious that the romantic tension would spill over and lead to a kiss. And, naturally, said kiss led to Jennifer winding up in Anthony's hotel room. The moment that seemed serendipitous, but J most likely knew what would happen if she was in such close quarters with the journalist.

Anthony ended up rejecting her, but only to write a passionate letter to her later urging her to meet him in Postman's Park, where they truly kissed and started their affair, most notably with a night out at Alberto's. The acknowledgement of feelings and their love was unbearably sweet, especially because viewers had to wait a while to work through the suspense.

3 Jennifer Races To Run Away With Anthony

This flashback was perhaps the most action-filled one in the whole movie, and it was an emotional rollercoaster too. Anthony and Jennifer continued their affair in London, and their honeymoon phase came to a crashing halt when Anthony asked Jennifer to runaway to New York with him. In anguish and confusion, she refused and left, only to finally leave her wedding ring behind and rush to Marylebone Station to meet Boot.

Although this reminiscence was predictably full of bad news - and ended with J in hospital and Boot leaving her without knowing - it wrapped up the ill-fated love story for the time being. The rush, angst, and sadness that their separation brought was very well-depicted in this scene.

2 Arrival At The French Riviera

Nothing was quite as lovely as watching the beginnings of the romance between Jennifer and Anthony. At first sight, these two were nothing alike, but upon closer inspection, they were twin flames who belonged together. The time jump showed them meeting when Anthony came to interview J's husband, then him getting on her bad side with his drunken tirade about rich society women, followed by an oh-so-sincere apology letter which made her laugh.

This scene also showed the very first of their day trips together on a boat, which kickstarted their regular correspondence with each other. It's always fascinating to watch the origins of love, and this flashback did the job perfectly.

1 The Happy Ending

Although this scene wasn't an actual flashback, it was a reimagining of what life would have been if Jennifer hadn't had the accident on that fateful night. With the help of Ellie and Rory, some of the best characters of The Last Letter From Your LoverJennifer and Boot were able to reunite decades after they went their own ways.

With them, it was as if no time had passed, and their union made it seem as if J had reached the station that night, and the two had ridden off into the sunset together to start their new life together. The bittersweet flashback was a tearjerker, and easily the best one in the movie.
