Spoilers ahead for Symbiote Spider-Man: Crossroads #2!
Marvel has revealed that the Hulk was the first hero to fight Venom! In Symbiote Spider-Man: Crossroads #2, on sale now in print and digital, Spider-Man, shortly before he banishes the symbiote costume, is hurled into an alternate dimension. There, he encounters the Incredible Hulk, and when a mystical stone gives Spidey an “upgrade,” he morphs into a version of Venom, and it's on the Hulk to stop him.
The story of Spider-Man and his symbiote suit begins in 1984’s Secret Wars. While on the Beyonder’s Battleworld, Spider-Man finds a black substance that bonds itself to him, giving him an all-black costume. He would wear this suit for a few years, but over time it becomes apparent something is wrong, and the suit is leading him down a dark path. Spider-Man rids himself of the suit, it bonds with Eddie Brock to create Venom, and the rest is history. Marvel has recently published a line of miniseries set in this era, and Symbiote Spider-Man: Crossroads is the latest. In issue one, Moondark attempts to steal a magical stone at the request of Karnilla. Spider-Man, with an assist from Black Cat, is able to stop Moondark, but Karnnilla arrives on the scene and throws Spider-Man, still with the symbiote suit, into the bizarre Crossroads Dimension—and right in the path of the Hulk. And now in the second issue, written by Peter David, with art by Greg Land, inks by Jay Leisten, colors by Frank D’Armata and letters by Joe Sabino, the Hulk must now fight Spider-Man.
The magical stone Moondark has been sent to retrieve is also sent to the Crossroads Dimension with Spider-Man. He picks it up and immediately falls under its spell. The Hulk punches him hard, knocking him out of his trance. The stone is not done with Spider-Man, and bonds with him. The Hulk continues his assault on Spidey, but the stone has changed the Wall-Crawler—and his new look bears a strong resemblance to Venom! Not only does he resemble Venom, he acts like him too. Now surging with power, the Hulk must face this proto-Venom. The two fight, and eventually Spider-Man is freed from the stone’s influence, and it is as if nothing has happened.
The Hulk does not realize it at the time, but he is the first Marvel hero to fight Venom. Under the influence of the stone, Spider-Man morphs into a forerunner to the anti-hero. Not only does he grow larger, with fangs and claws like that of Venom’s, but he develops a similar personality as well. While he is still outclassed strength-wise by the Hulk, this proto-Venom is able to hold his own and even gets under the Jade Giant’s skin.
This miniseries is set during one of the Hulk’s “mindless” phases, so he will likely have no memory of seeing Spider-Man in this state. Spider-Man has given the Marvel Universe a glimpse into its future, and as he takes on this early version of Venom, the Hulk has no way of knowing what an important figure his opponent will one day become.
