Netflix has revealed the first official images of the new Prince Charles (Dominic West) and Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki) in The Crown, season 5. The Emmy Award-winning Netflix original drama premiered in 2016 and chronicles the complicated lives of the British Royal family. The first four seasons of the series spanned several decades, from the late 1940s to 1990. Season 5 will be the show's penultimate one, with showrunner Peter Morgan confirming The Crown will end after season 6.
The time jump in season 5 will see the introduction of a completely new cast of actors, as was the case in season 3. Imelda Staunton (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Downton Abbey) will succeed both Claire Foy and Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II, while Jonathan Pryce joins as the new Prince Phillip, Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret, Jonny Lee Miller as John Major, and Olivia Williams as Camilla Parker Bowles. It has been confirmed that the new episodes will tackle events of the early 1990s, and it is also expected that season 5 will depict the tragic death of Princess Diana in 1997.
Netflix has finally revealed the first official look at its new Charles and Diana. In two seperate images, fans have been given their first taste of West (The Wire, Les Misérables, The Affair) and Debicki (The Great Gatsby, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) in their roles as the deeply unhappy royal couple. While the images don't give any specific plot details away, they are certainly representative of the lonely, despondent tone struck by the finale of season 4 that found Charles and Diana trapped in an unsuccessful marriage. While West and Debicki are critically-acclaimed actors in their own right, the pair have big shoes to fill following on from the performances of Josh O'Connor and Emma Corrin as Charles and Diana in season 4. Despite only appearing in one season of The Crown, O'Connor and Corrin stole the hearts of fans and became two of the most beloved actors in the last season. Both were nominated for Emmy Awards for their roles.
Given the 1990s setting of season 5, there is no doubt that Charles and Diana's fractured relationship will remain a central narrative arc in the upcoming episodes. Surrounded by a star-studded cast as the remaining royal family and its inner circle, however, it certainly won't be the only source of drama. But with such a perfectly chosen group of actors, and sitting in the capable hands of showrunner Morgan, The Crown, season 5 is more than equipped to tackle this tumultuous period of recent history.
