The Big Bang Theory: 10 Major Relationships, Ranked Most To Least Successful

Apart from science and nerdy pop-culture references, The Big Bang Theory was well-known for its drama-filled romantic relationships. From the highly relatable Howard and Bernadette to the adorably awkward Sheldon and Amy, each relationship was special in its own way.

As much as each of these relationships was entertaining, some were more successful than others. Success in relationships on The Big Bang Theory wasn't just about how long the couple was together or even if they were married. It extended to other things like how much they loved and supported each other through the good or the bad like illness and death of a loved one.

9 Howard & Bernadette

Their love story didn't have the same attention that Leonard's and Sheldon's had, but Howard and Bernadette's relationship on TBBT was the most realistic. After a tentative start in season 3's "The Creepy Candy Coating Corollary," their relationship grew more serious until they were finally married and later had two children.

As far as successful relationships go, Howard and Bernadette ticked a lot of the boxes. She called him out on his creepy behavior and he grew a lot from it. They supported each other through Howard's vasectomy and Bernadette being on bed rest during her second pregnancy. When he lost his mother, she helped him get through it. Having weathered so many storms together without breaking apart, there's no question they're the most successful couple.

8 Sheldon & Amy

The 'Shamy' took a long time to even get to a point where it was an official relationship. Despite the slow start, Sheldon and Amy stood the test of time, and by season 12, they were married and had a Nobel Prize to their name. The way they worked together to secure their Nobel Prize win was one of the things that highlighted the couple's growth on the show.

Amy changed significantly over the course of her relationship with Sheldon and so did he. She was happier, with more people who genuinely cared about her and he was more considerate. For example, when Pemberton and Campbell suggested cutting Amy out to improve their chances of winning the Nobel, he refused to do it, even though it was something he always wanted. Although Sheldon shows these moments of growth that highlight their success as a couple, a lot of times it felt like Amy was his caretaker and not someone he was romantically involved withand he treated her that way too.

7 Leonard & Penny

As the show's central love story, the audience got to see more of Leonard and Penny's relationship than anyone else. They had a fairly good friendship which evolved into a moderately successful relationship, with lots of drama in between. Even though they don't have much in common, they managed to stay together.

Leonard and Penny's relationship had ups and downs, through which they both improved. She brought him out of his shell so he was less timid and afraid to try new things and he helped her become more mature. Sometimes though, it appeared as if Leonard didn't fully escape the friend zone and they behaved more like friends with benefits than a romantic couple.

6 Raj & Anu

Initially, Raj and Anu were an arranged match, but after a while, they hit pause on marriage and got to know each other better first. They didn't have much in common either and some TBBT fans believed Raj and Anu were doomed to fail from the start. But for a while, there was hope for Raj to finally settle down with someone.

Of Raj's many relationships, the one with Anu resulted in the most emotional growth for him. Before that, he came out of his relationships with the mentality that he was unlovable and desperate to cling on to the next woman he dated. After Anu, he made the decision not to follow her to London just because he was scared to be alone. So, while the relationship ended, it did succeed in helping Raj with his personal growth.

5 Stuart & Denise

Having spent seasons watching Stuart constantly draw the short end of the stick, it was nice to see him finally win. By the series finale, his comic book store was thriving and he was in a good relationship with his colleague, Denise.

They didn't get much screen time, but the little that was shown of them had important milestones for their relationship that pointed to its success. After an awkward moment when Denise subtly suggested moving in together, they had an honest conversation about the pace at which their relationship was moving. They also had a shared love and understanding for comic books and their relationship was still going strong by the series finale.

4 Leonard & Priya

Priya's relationship was another major one on the show, lasting almost an entire season. Both of them were smart and successful in their careers, and even though Raj opposed the relationship at first, they stuck with it.

Leonard and Priya were a couple that seemed great on paper, but digging deep into their relationship, it was clear they weren't built to last. Priya kept trying to change Leonard; from his clothes to his glasses. She wasn't really accepting of the things he loved, especially comic books and video games, and also insisted on keeping their relationship a secret from her parents.

3 Raj & Emily

Although it was his longest, Raj's relationship with Emily didn't do very well. Sure, they came a long way together, but Raj was miserable half the time. Later when they broke up, Emily also admitted to being put off by his dependence on his family's wealth.

TBBT fans had hope that Raj and Emily would go the distance, and for a while, it seemed like they would. However, their relationship was based on too much pretense on both ends for it to work out and be successful. Raj only stayed in the relationship as long as he did because he didn't want to be single and alone.

2 Raj & Lucy

Lucy and Raj had one of the sweetest meet-cutes on The Big Bang Theory after Raj's brilliant speech in the comic book store about being single. They had a couple of dates after that and learned more about each other, including Raj having selective mutism and Lucy having severe social anxiety.

The two were honest about their challenges early in their relationship and that open communication could have helped them build a strong relationship. However, later on, Raj became pushy about Lucy meeting his friends and the pressure was too much for her so they broke up. After their breakup, Raj was able to talk to women without alcohol, so at least one good thing came out of the relationship.

1 Zack & Penny

Zack and Penny's relationship mirrored hers and Leonard's in its on and off nature. It was hardly a relationship filled with love and even Penny admitted to getting back with Zack so she wouldn't be alone on New Year's Eve. They also got married in Las Vegas, although they thought it was a fake wedding. Ironically, Penny's "real" wedding to Leonard was in Vegas too.

Through most of her relationship with Zack, Penny still harbored feelings for Leonard. Besides that, she felt that Zack didn't challenge her much on an intellectual level, one of many reasons why the couple failed.
