Terminator: Genisys Failure Made Director Lose Will To Make Movies

Terminator: Genisys director Alan Taylor said that the film made him lose his will to make movies. The franchise originally began with James Cameron's The Terminator, which was released in 1984. The science fiction movie sees Arnold Schwarzenegger playing the Terminator, who is a cyborg who has time traveled from the future to assassinate Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton). Little does she realize, her unborn son will save the world from artificial intelligence one day, which is why she has been targeted. It ultimately led to a film franchise, video games, comic books, among other content mediums.

The fifth installment in the franchise is titled Terminator: Genisys, which was released in 2015. The plot follows a soldier named Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney). The world is now a post-apocalyptic landscape, as humanity fights against Skynet. He's sent back to the year 1984 to stop Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) from being killed. However, he discovers that things have been changed by Skynet, resulting in a broken timeline. The movie is directed by Taylor and written by Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island) and Patrick Lussier (Drive Angry).

In an interview with THR, Taylor talked about his evolution as a director and a storyteller. He discussed Terminator: Genisys and how unpleasant of an experience it was. Taylor explained how he lost his will to be a director. After all of the heavy backlash from fans and critics, he explained that he had to self-reflect in order to find his love for filmmaking again. Read on below for his full comment:

“I had lost the will to make movies. I lost the will to live as a director. I’m not blaming any person for that. The process was not good for me. So I came out of it having to rediscover the joy of filmmaking.”

Taylor is no stranger to working with big properties, even before Terminator: Genisys. He has primarily been involved with television, having worked on huge shows including Lost and The West Wing. Perhaps his biggest shows that he has directed include The Sopranos and Game of Thrones. On the film side, he's directed the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) entry Thor: The Dark World. His next film is a prequel to The Sopranos, which is titled The Many Saints of Newark. While even his MCU movie wasn't very positively received, his work in television is incredibly impressive.

On a reported budget of around $156 million, Terminator: Genisys made $440 million at the global box office, making the movie a financial success. The only other film in the franchise to earn more was Terminator 2. However, the critical and audience backlash was so intense that it deeply impacted Taylor. He noted that he doesn't place blame on anyone in particular, although it took him some time to find his passion again for the art of filmmaking. At the end of the day, no filmmaker intentionally sets out to make a bad movie and disappoint fans of a major franchise.
