Super Nintendo World has had its first accident, as a Goomba Tower fixture collapsed, causing rides to be closed in the park. Super Nintendo World is a massive theme park in Universal Studios Japan, which currently consists of exclusively Super Mario Bros.-themed attractions.
Nintendo made a lot of money during the pandemic, due to the increased sales of the Nintendo Switch, Ring-Fit Adventure, and the incredible success of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, all of which can be attributed at least partially to lockdown boredom. The same cannot be said for the launch of Super Nintendo World, which has faced numerous delays, temporary shutdowns, and limits to attendance, due to the continuing pandemic. What footage has been released of the park makes it look like a lot of fun, but current border restrictions mean international fans can only see the park through other people's recordings, as tourists cannot enter Japan.
After this troubled history, Super Nintendo World is now open, but the park has had an incident. According to Video Games Chronicle, a ride was temporarily closed in Super Nintendo World, after a fixture in the shape of a Goomba Tower from the Super Mario Bros. series fell from its perch and crashed into the ground below, near an area of the park that guests cannot enter. Photos of the Gooma Tower absent from the Super Nintendo World skyline can be seen on the chitonii_usjfan Twitter account.
It's currently unclear why the Goomba Tower fell from its spot, but park management closed some of the rides while they investigated the issue. It's possible that the Goomba Tower was knocked down by the wind, which wouldn't be surprising, considering its shape. As VGC notes, typhoon season typically peaks in August and September, making typhoon winds an even stronger possibility for the cause of this accident.
It's fortunate that no one was harmed in this incident and it will hopefully lead to measures that will prevent similar accidents in the future. Super Nintendo World has already faced its fair share of issues, and a major accident could easily lead to the park being shut down. Nintendo clearly has big plans for the amusements sector, as there is what looks like a Donkey Kong expansion currently being constructed, as well as international branches coming in the future. Before it can do any of those things, it needs to get everything right with the original Super Nintendo World park, and fixtures dropping from the sky is a bad look for a family vacation.
