Starmancer Beginner's Guide (Tips, Tricks, & Strategies)

Once a player has grown their first colonist in colony sim Starmancer, time management becomes a key factor for early game. The in-game tutorial is helpful in directing new players toward big-picture goals, but there are several more specific steps that can be taken during this time to ensure a player's space colony begins on the right foot.

The system for choosing colonists in Starmancer is very similar to that in other colony sims, such as Oxygen Not Included; there are particular tasks they love, hate, or flat-out refuse to do. When growing the first colonist, players should ensure that they are able to mine, research, and build. This is as simple as making sure these tasks are not listed next to the word “refuses.” In Starmancer, a player can immediately assign a colonist an ego upgrade, so they should do that first.

Players can select the colonist and then click “View Upgrades.” In this menu, the player is given three options:

  • Athletic: Increased movement speed
  • Durable: Increased max health
  • Regular: Produces more biowaste (increases urinate need)

Each option comes with its own advantages, and it is recommended to assign one of these upgrades to each of the first three colonists printed in Starmancer. The advantages of health and speed are evident, but players should also note that the Waste Recycler and the Food Brick Factory can be used in conjunction to create nutrition bricks, so more biowaste is an asset in terms of no-cost food production in Starmancer.

After working on the first colonist, Starmancer's in-game tutorial will prompt the player to activate the core terminal. The player is free to grow another colonist at this time; however, this is a step that should instead be taken during the first mining expedition.

After the first colonist has been grown and the core terminal has been activated, players will be prompted to go on a mining expedition using the starmap located in the lower right-hand corner of the screen. At the start of Starmancer, players will only be able to mine ore, so they should choose an asteroid with ore and low infection risk.

Like mining in Going Medieval, another recent colony builder, players will need to assign a colonist to the mining expedition. To do this, they should exit the starmap, click the colonist, click the command override button, and then click the spaceship attached to the station. They will finish by clicking “pilot ship.” Players can also access the starmap by clicking on the ship.

Time management is essential at the outset of most other great colony sims, and players can maximize their efficiency in Starmancer by using this time to select the incubation tank and unlock another colonist. Both the mining expedition and the process of growing colonists take some time and can be sped up in Starmancer. Players should ensure that their second ego is able to do research and build. After they are grown and harvested, there is still time to set up some vital components at the base before the first colonist returns, time that the in-game tutorial does not fill. This time is crucial for beginning research and construction on essential utilities.
