Stargirl May Have Created A Villain For Barry Allen's Flash

The Jay Garrick reference in the Stargirl season 2 premiere may actually mean that the speedster accidentally created a new villain for the Barry Allen version of The Flash in the Arrowverse. Though he hasn’t appeared yet, it’s long been known that there was a Flash on Stargirl’s Earth – it just isn’t Grant Gustin’s character, or any other incarnation of Barry Allen. Instead, it’s John Wesley Shipp’s Jay Garrick.

In Stargirl’s reality, which is called Earth-2 in the Arrowverse, Jay Garrick was one of the many superheroes on the Justice Society roster. Supposedly, he was among the casualties of the big battle with the Injustice Society. His costume and helmet were on display in season 1, but season 2 is confirmed to feature Jay Garrick in the flesh. Following an appearance in The Flash’s two-part season 7 finale as the character, Shipp will reprise his role in a season 2 episode, presumably as Earth-2’s Jay Garrick. It’s not clear yet if he’ll be limited to flashbacks, or if he’ll turn up alive and become actively involved in the plot.

Ahead of his Stargirl guest spot, the season 2 premiere dropped an interesting reference to the character’s activities. When asking about the whereabouts of Injustice Society villain Per Degaton, Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson) explained that he was defeated by the Flash, who trapped him in “an alternate timeline”. Not only did this comment confirm that at least one Stargirl character is aware of the multiverse, but it also may have set in motion a new adversary for Barry Allen on The Flash. Pat didn’t specify about the timeline Per Degaton was sent to, but it’s at least possible that he was talking about Earth-Prime.

In DC Comics, Per Degaton is a time-traveling scientist and murderer who has made multiple attempts to take down his most hated foes, the Justice Society. They’re likely his main enemies in the Arrowverse’s continuity as well, but being in another world could cause him to set his sights on Barry. If Jay Garrick battled the villain and stranded him on Earth-Prime in the Arrowverse’s post-Crisis history, he could emerge as a problem for Barry and Team Flash at some point in the future.

Per Degaton being on the loose somewhere on Earth-Prime would lend The Flash season 8 an interesting new antagonist, possibly as a fun, one-off villain. Using the character would also allow the Arrowverse to revisit and reimagine a forgotten Legends of Tomorrow character. In season 1, the crew of the Waverider came in contact with a very young Per Degaton, who was destined to grow up into an evil dictator. An adult version of him was never properly explored, but that could change on The Flash. While Team Flash may be capable of foiling his scheme on their own, the Arrowverse could use Per Degaton’s connection to Stargirl as the basis for one of The Flash season 8’s five mini-crossover episodes by having him join forces with the Justice Society.
