Skyrim Actually Has Two Excaliburs (& Where To Find Them)

While exploring the world of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, players can come across not one Excalibur, but two. These easter eggs reference the legendary sword wielded by King Arthur which helped him to establish the kingdom of Camelot. Interestingly, the reason that two can be found is because there is a discrepancy in exactly how Arthur acquires his famous blade. Depending on the retelling of the story, Arthur acquired Excalibur by either pulling it from the enchanted stone or receiving it from the Lady of the Lake.

In the first, the wizard Merlin seeks to quell unrest in the kingdom by placing a sword within a large stone and enchanting it to only be removed by the one true king, which is revealed to be a young Arthur. This is the way that most media and games that reference King Arthur, like AC Valhalla, have their characters find Excalibur. The second claims that Arthur, well into his Kingship, goes on a journey with Merlin to meet the Lady of the Lake, who would then gift Arthur with the magic sword Excalibur.

An article by World History Encyclopedia clarifies that the more widely accepted story is that Arthur did pull a sword from a stone to prove his right to be King, but acquired Excalibur from the Lady of the Lake later in his life. This choice is what Skyrim seems to be referencing not only because there are two swords, but because one has the potential to be much more powerful. Here's where players can find them.

North-east of Skyrim’s city of Markarth is a cave called Rebel’s Cairn. The easiest way to get there is to travel east from Markarth towards Sky Haven Temple, then travel north-east towards Red Eagle Roundabout and go right past it to reach Rebel’s Cairn. Upon arriving, players will be met with an above-ground entrance that has a fence to the right and a large torch to the left.

Near that torch will be a pile of rocks surrounded by blood and bones with a distinctive sword poking out from the top. As the Dragonborn, the question of worthiness is already answered, so just walk up to the stone and claim the first Excalibur. This isn't the best sword to use out of Skyrim’s two Excaliburs because it’s just a plain steel sword with a grand presentation. So, it’s time to find the second and more powerful sword.

The Lady of the Lake is found in an unmarked location near Bleakwind Basin. The easiest way to get there is to fast-travel to Whiterun and then head north-west to Bleakwind Basin. To avoid getting knocked into the sky by Giants, turn north-east and walk past the water directly next to the camp and instead head towards the small river up the hill. A skeletal hand will be reaching out of the water and holding a sword for the player to take.

Unlike the first Excalibur in Skyrim, this sword is a leveled weapon, which means that the higher level the player is when they find it, the stronger the sword will be. While neither are enchanted or have any special abilities, Skyrim’s two Excaliburs are fun references to a well-known legend and provide players with their own little Arthurian quest.
