Scream 5 Trailer Tricky To Assemble Due To The Film's Many Spoilers

The trailer for the upcoming fifth installment in the Scream horror franchise has been tricky to assemble due to the film’s many spoilers, says its co-director, Tyler Gillett. After 25 years of Scream films, the latest addition to the wildly popular slasher franchise will mark the first time in its history that creator and horror filmmaking icon Wes Craven isn’t involved. Craven passed away in 2015, leaving behind a tremendous body of work that continues to inspire.

For years following the first Scream’s release in 1996, Craven did his best to attempt to recapture the lightning in a bottle moment that the film had generated. Finding that rare balance between humor, horror, and even self-deprecation on Craven’s part, Scream gave the slasher genre new life, turning a whole new generation on to the fun of homicidal maniacs chasing down teenage victims. But with each new sequel that arrived, the series seemed to grow increasingly distant from what made the original so memorable. For the most part, the films were still fun, but with each new installment, fans have consistently been hopeful that this will be the one that brings back the initial thrills of the first film. With Scream 5 on its way, it seems the most prominent issue currently isn’t whether or not fans will approve, but how the first trailer can be put together without spoiling the film’s many surprising twists and turns.

While speaking about Scream on the Hello Sidney podcast, Radio Silence, co-director Tyler Gillett revealed that putting together a trailer that avoids ruining any of the film’s surprises is going to be a big challenge. Much of the film offers moments that can quickly spoil the entire plot. As such, Gillett and co-director Matt Bettinelli-Olpin are very curious to see just how the film’s marketing department will handle creating the perfect trailer. Acknowledging the limited options involved in the process, Gillett said:

“That’s going to be the challenge with the trailer. There’s a lot in this movie that can be spoiled really easily. We’re so curious to see how the marketing department is going to thread the needle. Because it’s a very narrow one.”

In other words, what fans can most likely expect when the trailer finally does arrive will be something that shows off very little of what’s in store. At least, that would be the best-case scenario for those fans wanting Scream 5’s most rewarding details to remain unspoiled until the film’s January 14, 2022 release. It is indeed a tricky situation, given that by the time the film is released, fans will have been waiting over a decade to see a new entry in the series. What’s more, the film was a challenge to put together, with series lead Neve Campbell originally more than a little hesitant to return for another outing as Sidney Prescott.

Thankfully, Gillett and Bettinelli-Olpin were able to get the original surviving cast together once again. There’s been plenty of rumors surrounding Scream 5 as well, with one particular persistent theory being that this will be the film in which Sidney finally succumbs to the Ghostface killer. Whether or not that will prove to be true is anyone’s guess. Still, given the considerable amount of spoilers that something as minor as a trailer can offer, fans of the series will be gearing up for what could be the most shocking entry yet.
