Michael Keaton reveals he doesn't understand the plans for the Marvel movie multiverse despite his upcoming role in Sony's Morbius. After becoming well-known in the comic book genre for his portrayals of Bruce Wayne in Tim Burton's Batman films, Keaton refrained from returning until Spider-Man: Homecoming, in which he played the villainous Adrian Toomes, aka the Vulture. Though defeated and locked in prison by the end of the Marvel Cinematic Universe film, fans were surprised when the character appeared in the first trailer for Morbius.
This surprise stemmed from the fact that the Jared Leto-led film is set in the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters, which is based around Spider-Man characters but existing apart from Disney's MCU. The new universe was launched with the Tom Hardy-starring Venom and fans have been debating since whether the two franchises would crossover given the character being an archenemy to Spider-Man, who is currently being played by Tom Holland in the MCU. As anticipation continues to build for the return of Keaton's Vulture in Morbius, it appears audiences aren't the only ones still scratching their heads about the explanation behind his appearance.
Keaton recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss his upcoming returns to the superhero genre with Morbius and The Batman. In reflecting on the multiverse nature of both projects, Keaton admitted he doesn't understand how the interconnected universes work and that the filmmakers of the former attempted to explain it to him and he still couldn't grasp the concept, but had a laugh with the group. “I’m nodding like I know what the f-ck they’re talking about. I go, ‘Uh-huh.’ And I’m thinking, ‘You may as well be explaining quantum physics right now to me. All I know is I just know my guy. And I know the basics.’ So finally, they were looking at me, and they just started laughing. They said, ‘You don’t know what we’re talking about, do you?’ I said, ‘No, I don’t, no idea what you’re talking about.’ “
The delicate ties between the MCU and SPUMC has been just as confusing for audiences as it is for Keaton. The first trailer for Morbius not only featured the appearance of Vulture but also a photo of Spider-Man with the word "murderer" graffitied over it, both of which seemingly point to connections to the the former's webslinging franchise, especially in the wake of Spider-Man: Far From Home's final moments seeing Mysterio frame the titular hero as a killer. While Morbius co-star Tyrese Gibson has previously confirmed the film connects the two universes, Sony swiftly debunked his statement and noted it is only set in the SPUMC.
It's somewhat ironic that Keaton's latest returns to the comic book genre with Morbius and The Flash prove to be just as complicated a concept to figure out for him as for audiences. Whereas the former marked a change in pace for the star in bringing him back to the genre, the latter marks a groundbreaking return to one of his most iconic roles and one closely tied to the popularity of comic book movies and is now further attached to introducing audiences to the concept of the multiverse. Only time will tell whether Keaton's return as Vulture will work towards tying the MCU and SPUMC together when Morbius arrives in theaters in January 2022.
