The trailer for What If...? episode 4 reveals the change in Doctor Strange's story that leads him down a darker path. Following the creation of the multiverse at the end of Loki season 1, Marvel's latest Disney+ series has explored the alternate timelines what exist within the MCU. What If...?, which is already guaranteed to have a second season, has offered unique twists on familiar movies, from Captain America: The First Avenger to Thor. And with several episodes still to go in season 1, What If...? is only getting started.
Episode 4 will arrive on Disney+ this Wednesday, and it's confirmed to center on Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange. The various trailers for What If...?, as well as an early plot synopsis for the episode, have all hinted that the series will find Doctor Strange at a crossroads following a tragic loss. However, instead of becoming the hero fans know and love, he'll become the villain. Up until now, Marvel has remained quiet about what could lead to this drastic change, but now the trailer for tomorrow's What If...? has peeled back the curtain.

As the What If...? trailer reveals, Doctor Strange will become consumed with finding a spell that can bring Christine back to life. It's a vastly different introduction to magic than the one he had in his first solo movie, since then he was driven only by his desire to regain full movement in his hands. Interestingly, Doctor Strange taught him how to cope with loss through the death of the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton). However, with grief hitting him before he becomes a more selfless person, he'll undergo a new kind of journey in What If...?.
The previous installments of What If...? have similarly hinged on one key change, whether it be what would've happened if Peggy Carter stayed behind for Steve Rogers' super-soldier transformation or what if the Ravagers went to Wakanda instead of Missouri while searching for Peter Quill. Episode 4 has its own Marvel twist, and it'll be interesting to see how the rest of the MCU is altered as a result. Just the change in Doctor Strange's character is drastic, but seeing as he plays a key role in other conflicts, it could have major ramifications. Audiences will get to see it all unfold on Disney+ soon.
