Mario Golf's Update Is A Good Start | Screen Rant

When Mario Golf: Super Rush was first released in June, the title was criticized for lacking content to keep players occupied, but its first update shows hope for update support going forward. Nintendo announced that just like Mario Tennis Aces before it, Super Rush will be receiving multiple free updates that add a considerable amount of content to the game. This has become a standard practice for Nintendo with games like Splatoon 2 and Animal Crossing: New Horizons following a similar model. The first update has dropped and it brought enough quality content for a great start to Mario Golf's promised line of updates.

Most games that release with DLC force players to pay for the additional content, but a fair number of Nintendo games simply offer free updates that offer new maps, characters, or anything of that nature. The aforementioned Splatoon and Animal Crossing used this update model by adding new maps and weapons and new items and seasonal tasks respectively, though Splatoon 2 also got some paid DLC in addition. Some fans may find the updates of one game or another more satisfying, but Mario Golf's usage of this model likely didn't come as a surprise to many. Mario Tennis Aces did the same before it and it ended up being a successful Mario sports title on the Switch.

When Mario Golf: Super Rush launched, it was lacking in content from multiple angles. Outside of the story mode, there's not much to do when playing in single-player besides shooting for high scores. Players also noticed that the roster is a little lackluster when compared to the character lists in other Mario games, and there was no ranked mode online. However, this free Super Rush update adds Toadette, the New Donk City course, and also the previously mentioned ranked mode. This all accumulates to a great start for Mario Golf's free updates.

These additions certainly add a fair amount to Super Rush, but future updates need to maintain the momentum laid out by this one. New Donk City might be one of the best parts about this update, since it's got more personality than any of the courses in the base game. Half of them take place on standard-looking golf courses with the occasional wind or boulder obstacle. These new maps need to include a similar amount of imagination and help give Super Rush a more distinct flavor from other sports games on the market.

Ranked mode is also a huge deal since it will add to the longevity of the online experience, though that doesn't mean that this should be where additional modes stop. Bringing back modes like Mini Golf or Ring Shot could also help add some variety to the experience which would make the game more enjoyable. Combining these modes with ranked online play would also be a fantastic idea. However, Toadette was a requested character who probably should have been in the base roster, so it would be great if Nintendo added wild cards like Professor E-Gad, Funky Kong, or even Link. Mario Golf: Super Rush's first update was a solid start, but it still has a long way to go before it reaches the finish line.
