James Gunn wants to do more big screen projects involving the villains of the DC universe after working on The Suicide Squad. The filmmaker cut his teeth writing 2004’s horror classic Dawn of the Dead as well as directing 2006’s Slither before making a name for himself by directing multiple comic book adaptations under the Marvel banner. His latest project is a hybrid sequel-reboot to 2016's Suicide Squad and Gunn's film debuted on HBO Max and in theaters this weekend after years of anticipation.
Most mainstream audiences likely became familiar with Gunn after the debut of the first Guardians of the Galaxy back in 2014. Though Star-Lord and his companions are more misfit anti-heroes than true villains, critics and audiences saw Gunn’s work in the Marvel world as a display of his adept handling of characters with complex senses of morality. He then took that skill to DC to take the reins of The Suicide Squad from David Ayer, which follows a group of DC supervillains tasked to perform a dangerous search and destroy mission for Amanda Waller (Viola Davis). If they fail the mission they die, but Waller will get time taken off their sentences at Belle Reve prison if they succeed and survive.
With The Suicide Squad now getting positive reviews from audiences, Gunn recently revealed to ET that he would like to return to this universe. Specifically, he wants to tell more stories focused on the DC villains. Even though he had reportedly been offered bigger ticket characters like Superman, he chose The Suicide Squad because those characters caught his attention, and he wants to continue exploring that avenue of the DC universe.
I have all sorts of ideas, and we talk about it all the time. So I don't feel like I'm done with this villain-verse yet.
It has already been confirmed that The Suicide Squad won’t be James Gunn’s final work involving these characters. In addition to his recent exploration of Task Force X, the filmmaker is also working on the Peacemaker series for HBO Max. That project will follow John Cena as the titular character for at least one season and will reportedly send him on a more grounded mission than his Suicide Squad exploits. Knowing that Peacemaker is on the way to the small screen, and James Gunn is still interested in more villain-focused projects on the big screen, audiences will have to wait and see what he commits to next.
There is plenty of room for James Gunn to continue playing with the DC villains on the big and small screens. DC has one of the deepest benches of memorable bad guys of any fictional universe, meaning the Slither director still has several iconic characters that he could pull for another project. Whether or not that means utilizing classics like The Joker and Bane or lesser-known personalities in the tradition of The Suicide Squad’s Bloodsport (Idris Elba) and Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior) remains to be seen, but for now, audiences can check out The Suicide Squad in theaters and on HBO Max.
