Warning: This article contains spoilers for What If...? episode 2.
Marvel's What If...? revealed that the Collector killed several Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes, and the victims might include Captain America and Thor. Marvel shocked fans with some of its reveals in What If...? episode 2. In the episode, T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) becomes Star-Lord, and Peter Quill (voiced by Brian T. Delaney) gets left on Earth. T'Challa's Star-Lord immediately improves the galaxy, getting the Ravagers to change their ways and even convincing Thanos (Josh Brolin) to give up his genocidal dreams. Because of T'Challa, Thanos realizes there are other ways to balance the universe besides mercilessly snapping away half of all life.
However, the T'Challa change also has some unfortunate consequences. The Collector (Benicio Del Toro) fills the void left by Thanos. He becomes the ruler of the intergalactic underworld, using his power and influence to expand his collection of trophies and bring devastation to those around him. He even employs the Black Order, Thanos' former minions, to do his evil bidding. Additionally, without the Guardians of the Galaxy by his side, Quill is left vulnerable on Earth. He becomes an easy target for Ego (Kurt Russell), his Celestial dad. Ego wants to use Quill's Celestial heritage to help power his universal takeover, and now there isn't anyone to stop him. Ego's impending disaster could be even worse than Thanos' snap.
During the episode, Easter eggs reveal dark truths about the fate of some Marvel heroes. After T'Challa and the Collector get into a fight, the latter reveals some of the weapons he's added to his Marvel collection. He bashes T'Challa with a rock arm, which he said he hacked off of a "terribly chatty Kronan" that is undoubtedly Taika Waititi's Korg. The Collector also possesses Captain America's shield and Thor's hammer. Since those characters likely wouldn't give up their weapons willingly, the reveal seems to spell their doom. Though it appears the Collector would be outmatched against either Chris Evans' Captain America or Chris Hemsworth's Thor, there are ways he could've defeated them.
What If...? gives hints of how the Collector killed Thor and Cap. Though Captain America seems like he'd have an easy time defeating the Collector, the timeline may reveal his weakness. The main action of the episode takes place in 2008. Cap, of course, went into the ice in 1945, and SHIELD didn't revive him until 2011. Because of Captain America's MCU timeline, it's possible he was still under the ice when he encountered the Collector. If so, he would've been an easy target. The Collector also possesses Hela's helmet and says that Cate Blanchett's character "had taste." The past tense of the quote suggests the Collector killed Hela. And since Hela was immensely powerful, it's clear that this version of the Collector could also have the power to take down Thor.
The episode doesn't explicitly indicate Cap and Thor are dead. Unlike Hela and Korg, What If...? stays vague on the fate of those two heroes. The Collector possibly received their weapons through different means. However, it's clear that the villain would have the opportunity and the power to take down both. At the very least, it doesn't look good. After all, Cap giving his shield to a villain is a storyline that's even too wild for What If...?.
