Green Lantern director Martin Campbell humorously shut down any chance of a sequel. Campbell has several other credits in his filmography before making Green Lantern in 2011. He won a BAFTA for the mini-series titled Edge of Darkness back in 1985. He's no stranger to the action genre with his works in the James Bond universe, having directed 1995's GoldenEye and 2006's Casino Royale. On August 20, his next action/thriller will be released, which is called The Protégé.
Green Lantern is a superhero action movie based on the DC Comics character that the film is titled after. The story is centered on Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds), who works as a test pilot. He gets chosen as the first human member of the intergalactic organization called the Green Lantern Corps. Hal receives a ring that provides him with incredible powers, which he must use to save the universe from Parallax, who is voiced by Clancy Brown. The screenplay is written by Greg Berlanti, Michael Green, Marc Guggenheim, and Michael Goldenberg. The remainder of the cast is rounded out with Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, Angela Bassett, and Tim Robbins.
Campbell was doing a Reddit "ask me anything" (AMA) for his upcoming movie The Protégé. However, this was an opportunity for fans to ask questions about anything in his career. Campbell was asked by a Reddit user if audiences would ever be getting a Green Lantern 2. Campbell responded on the Lionsgate official account saying "Over my dead body."
On a reported budget of around $200 million, Green Lantern ended up bringing in $219.9 million globally. This is a poor performance on a big budget film for Warner Bros., as they needed to bring in a whole lot more money in order to consider this a financial success. In addition to the box office not being great, the movie became a mockery. Even Reynolds has repeatedly made fun of his inclusion in the movie. In Deadpool 2, the title character goes back in time to kill Reynolds prior to making the movie. He has also apologized in Deadpool's costume for his previous duds including Blade: Trinity and Green Lantern.
While there was some talk previously about a potential trilogy, Warner Bros. ultimately cancelled any sequels due to the poor box office performance and that audiences simply didn't want to see more of this iteration of the character. Judging by Campbell's reaction during the AMA, it's clear that he feels the same way about making any more Green Lantern movies. Reynolds has been self-aware about the quality of the movie for years, so it's clear that a sequel to the 2011 film will never happen. However, that doesn't mean that another iteration of the Green Lantern can't be successful, although Warner Bros. will need to tread carefully.
