Mondler was the silver lining to Ross's ill-fated wedding, and fans cherish it more than the show's often dramatic and tiring romance of Ross and Rachel. Years later, the majority of the fans still believe Mondler added to the show's years. That being said, others took to Reddit to express their unpopular opinions about the couple who, according to them, looked perfect only on the outside.
10 Monica Cheated On Chandler
Monica and Chandler wound up at the top of Friends' endgame couples. Their relationship was devoid of the infamous infidelity accusation and the we-were-on-a-break counter-argument that Ross and Rachel so often brought up. Reddit user limbtz, however, offers a differing point of view by claiming that while Chandler definitely wouldn't cheat on Monica, there were signs pointing to the fact that he was being cheated on. According to them, "She thought it's ok for her to flirt with other guys ... so it's not technically cheating but she did challenge the moral ground." They further explain, "In TOW the proposal, she was very excited when she saw Richard while Chandler was about to propose..."
This is an unpopular opinion, though, as none of these instances conclusively prove Monica would ever cheat on the love of her life. She was someone with a strong conscience and had she indulged in any untoward behavior, she would have admitted it upfront.
9 As A Couple, They Were Bad For The Show
Most fans believe Monica and Chandler were the heart and soul of Friends. But Reddit user nilanganray strongly disagrees and complains they were just too perfect for a sitcom setting, ultimately qualifying as boring. They barely found any complications in Monica and Chandler's relationship and equate them with other typical sitcom couples, like Marshall and Lily from How I Met Your Mother.
They post, "Chandler was a yes man for Monica. I remember when Monica wanted to use all of Chandler's savings for their wedding and Chandler had to unwillingly agree to her... The decision-making was up to Monica." The truth of the matter is, Chandler and Monica always found a middle ground during a conflict, and therefore him acting as a "yes man" is an opinion not many fans have.
8 They Didn't Have Many Bumps In The Road
Ilikepieguy123 further points out Chandler and Monica "were perfect for each other and didn't exactly have many bumps in the road." The user acknowledges while they dealt with minor issues, their problems were overly exaggerated to a point where they became unnecessary.
This is an unpopular opinion because most fans feel that Monica and Chandler's romantic growth is one of the best storylines on Friends. Besides, the couple didn't always see eye to eye on things, for example, about delaying parenthood or making extravagant purchases. They stood out because they talked openly about their thoughts and feelings.
7 They Became A Caricature Of Their Former Selves Once They Started Going Out
PrivateSpeaker says the show makers over-emphasized Monica's controlling behavior. They think Chandler and Monica "become caricatures of their former selves once they start going out." It further bothers them that Chandler "kind of accepted that he 'got lucky with Monica' and never seemed to realize his own worth."
But this opinion completely contradicts everything TV's most iconic couple stood for. Chandler showed amazing character growth once he started dating Monica and she was always prepared to meet him halfway. There's no doubt that she was an extraordinary woman, the endearing part was, Chandler early on realized the importance of appreciating what he had.
6 Their Relationship Wasn't Based On Actual Feelings
Monica and Chandler got together in the most unordinary circumstances on the show. This Reddit user, who although they swear by their love of Chandler and Monica as a couple, argues that before they got together, there was "zero attraction between them." They raise the question about Monica's vulnerability in London and ask if it wasn't for that moment and the night, would she have still ended up with him?
But while true to an extent, Chandler and Monica found comfort and love in each other's company when they least expected it, which is what made their relationship special. Although it happened out of nowhere, it gave them the realization that what they were looking for was always right in front of them, which is why how they felt about each other prior to this doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.
5 Monica Is The Worst Wife
While most fans think Monica is the greatest friend and partner, Redditor Captainofcereal, who acknowledges that their opinion may be in the minority, thinks that Monica was the worst wife. They write, "She regularly discounts Chandler's feelings and opinions, belittles his career, and generally only looks out for herself."
But this couldn't be further from the truth, as none of the amazing things would have happened to Chandler if it wasn't for Monica. She encouraged him to find his passion after he quit his job, she believed in him and encouraged him to make amends with his estranged father, Charles.
4 Chandler Was Monica's Second Option
Much has been made of Monica's feelings for Chandler and whether or not they were real. According to bornbutterfly15, "Chandler was her second option and her 'big love' was Richard." They write, "Even during her peak romance with Chandler, she was having secrets lunch dates with Richard, or making comments about him and comparing Chandler to him."
But most would agree that Monica bumped into Richard once, they grabbed a bite, and she clearly felt nothing towards him. She'd moved on from Richard and everything they had together before she and Chandler got together.
3 Monica Wasn't Over Richard
Redditor auj0urdhui expresses the unpopular opinion that "Monica was still clearly not over Richard." Taking cues from the ill-fated anniversary dinner, they argue, "Monica was obviously ecstatic to see Richard at their date. She calls him over and when Richard pointed out that her hair’s longer, she said, 'you always wanted me to.' She also agreed to let Richard and his date sit at the table beside them, knowing full well that Chandler has always been insecure of Richard and was uncomfortable with the situation."
Monica's behavior at the anniversary dinner was certainly odd. Having said that, it doesn't prove she was emotionally invested in Richard, still. Later in the episode, when he asked her if she ever thought about him, she instantly replied with a "no," followed by the words, "Getting over you was the hardest thing I've ever had to do."
2 Richard Was Way Better For Monica
Monica's former love interest, Richard, is pitted against her husband and soulmate, Chandler by one Reddit user who writes, "They seemed to get along better ... She never really seemed to get over him. He was way kinder. More mature."
1 The Proposal Was Cheesy
In the season 6 finale, when Monica finds out Chandler wanted the proposal to be a surprise, she takes charge and proposes to him instead. In a thread asking for unpopular opinions about the show, Reddit user ang334 isn't such a big fan of the proposal and states, "Monica and Chandler's proposal was cheesy and I skip it."
This opinion is way off base for most fans though, for the speech and scene are iconic entries into the cultural canon. The proposal was a perfect way to start the next chapter of their lives and most fans love it.
