Chris Hemsworth Welcomes Shang-Chi To the MCU With New Video

Chris Hemsworth has officially welcomed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings to the MCU. Monday evening saw the premiere of the latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which opens to mass audiences on September 3rd, 2021. The Simu Liu-starring film is the first cinematic introduction of the character of Shang-Chi to the world and early reactions thus far sound like it's a promising MCU movie.

It's been 10 years since Chris Hemsworth first wielded Mjolnir in his solo effort in the MCU with 2011's Thor. Directed by Kenneth Branagh, the film was the launching point for Hemsworth's iteration of the God of Thunder and it proved to be a career-making turn, spawning four sequels and appearances in all four Avengers films. It's since become common for established actors within a franchise to welcome new members to the family and the MCU has proven to be close-knit community in that regard with many of the actors following and commenting to each other on social media regularly.

Hemsworth is no stranger to kicking off a franchise and his commitment to the MCU has been a deep one. Having just wrapped filming on the fourth entry in the Thor franchise, Thor: Love and Thunder, directed by Taika Waititi, Hemsworth is still immersed in the MCU world, while his co-stars who started it alongside him - Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson - have all hung up their respective roles for the time being. Now, Liu and the rest of the cast of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings are entering the MCU fray and although things have gotten off to a rocky start with COVID-19 release date shuffles and a public spat with Disney CEO Bob Chapek, audiences will finally be able to see this new entry for themselves.

While it's unclear if Hemsworth will continue to wield Thor's hammer beyond his next appearance in 2022's Thor: Love and Thunder, it makes perfect sense that he'd throw his support behind Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Certainly it could be argued that he's obliged to do so, but it's also likely that Hemsworth is championing the next underdog entry in the MCU, which is exactly where he was back in 2011. With the next phase of the MCU now being built, it's entirely possible that Hemsworth and Liu could be standing side-by-side onscreen in a future Avengers film, so showing support early won't hurt that relationship.
